Uni kids starting how are they getting on?

I’m glad to hear your daughter is settling in, I’ve been following along with your posts and remembering how anxious I felt when our daughter started last year.

It’s great she’s getting to know her class and flat mates, having company can make all the difference. I wouldn’t worry too much about what she’s eating, she’ll get fed up eating junk eventually

My DD is loving it. She moved to Surrey last Sunday after being told she had her place on the Thursday as the course was full but someone dropped out. Her flat is lovely and she knew 2 of the other girls from a group chat she had been on. The majority of her classes are online but she has 1-2 practical sessions a week which is needed as she is doing vet med. What helps is that her boyfriend lives in Guildford and so she is comfortable in the town and she can also meet up with him.

DS2 did a Foundation course last year and is loving his proper course. However his flat is a nightmare. Issues with payment of bills. A small fire in the kitchen because of a gas leak. Boiler not working. Radiator leak. Water leak through lounge ceiling from upstairs flat. Rats in the garden. Not happy 😡

This is terrible, is this in Halls or privately rented? It needs sorting out, my son who was at uni a few years ago had mushrooms growing in his bathroom in a rented house. They sorted it but they grew back and he was leaving so wasn’t bothered! I’m glad he likes his course xx

Sounds like a good few resiliant kids here.

Our daughter is at Uni but lives at home (Uni is only 8 miles away, a 25 minute train journey) so we are lucky we don't have this worry at this time.

My DS moved into halls last week. He seems to be settling in and has his first online lecture today. The trouble is his flatmates are not bothered about the rule of 6. There's 6 in the flat and apparently one of them has invited 6 friends over to stay next week. He's said some will be sleeping in the kitchen. I'm not sure what to do about it. Any suggestions? It seems nobody is policing the halls so the students are doing what they want to.

Why can’t the six friends sleep in there own rooms? If they are at uni with him sleeping in the kitchen doesn’t make sense! My daughter has 8 in her flat so the rule of 6 doesn’t work! 🤷

This is tricky, I really don’t like be a grass but this really shouldn’t be allowed! If he’s caught I’m sure he will be in trouble. I don’t know what to suggest unless your son has a word with someone and nobody knows it was him!

I'd be getting in touch with the University Housing Office and making a strong complaint. That is just one student abusing the trust and respect for others, Covid or no Covid.
