BA wi-fi

My husband is wanting to purchase the wi-fi on our flight to watch the Euros in iplayer or ITV X.

Will the stream be ok or is it not worth the bother?

I've never streamed on it, but DH manages to work with it, be aware though that not all aircraft have wifi.

Thanks. Yeah I’ve read it’s only on some flights. I take it you just find out when you’re on the flgiht?
He’s just thinking it will pass the time if he could watch a couple of games 😂

You do, you'll find out in the In flight Manager's announcement at the start of the flight. Entire flight is £20 from memory - unless you're in First then it's complimentary. Sometimes they stream big matches for the passengers but I've not seen anything about the Euros.

No it isn’t really intended for streaming. It is fairly patchy when just checking emails or reading thedibb.

Seconding the comment from Claudette, unfortunately it isn't really fit for streaming. I've had trouble trying to access simple sports / news apps with it so streaming I fear would be near impossible. Unless it has been upgraded significantly in the past 12 months.

Thanks.

Sounds like it’s out the question then. He’ll just have to watch some films

SO, my first impulse was to say not only won't the speeds be good enough, but the geographical locking of ITV X might prevent him watching it even if it were.

I did think it might just be enough for some audio streaming of BBC Radio 5. Might...

However, when I've checked BAs onboard WiFi page it says "Browse & Stream package
This allows you to use instant messaging applications, browse the web and social media, send and download larger emails, as well as stream music, video content and films throughout your flight."

So maybe there is a chance...

However it does also say "The available bandwidth is shared by all .air users on board, which means that the actual speed depends on the number of users at any given time, as is the case with common ground hotspots. You may check the bandwidth available onboard and specific to your aircraft, by accessing the Wi-Fi portal and clicking the 'restrictions' link."

I've googled a bit and some people report success streaming video, but it was mentioned that a VPN suitable for UK streaming was essential.

Thank you for looking into it.

I had read the part about streaming, and I suppose if it wasn’t great, he’d be able to go on internet so wouldn’t be a total waste of money.

Whilst (as others have pointed out), TV streaming may be a stretch, I’ve used the radio before and it tends to work well.

So your husband may be able to listen to it at least!
