Day 11 - Leaky Cauldron, Bubba Gumps & Sassagoula Floatworks

Sorry it's been a while. I've been busy with work and then we were in Ireland visiting the girls for a few days.

Today was another Universal day. Breakfast was another mini muffin and chocolate croissant to no picture.

We started in US today so when we were hungry and it was still breakfast time we headed to the Leaky Cauldron. I prefer this over 3 Broomsticks as they bring the food out to you. In my mind that makes it more likely to be hot as any previous visits to the 3 Broomsticks for breakfast have resulted in cold food.

We both had the pancake breakfast which comes with sausage, bacon and a croissant (they all come with a croissant for some reason). This was fine. The sausages here are actually quite nice. I don’t normally like the sausages in the US, Disney’s in particular are pretty rank. I have no idea how much this was as I’ve thrown away the receipt but we got the 10% AP discount off it. According to the Universal app it’s $16.99 pp including drink.

Not sure why but I like taking pictures of condiments.

Later while in Hogsmeade we had a Butterbeer. We couldn’t use the AP discount as it was the cart on the way out before the bridge and presumably their machine couldn’t process it. We struggled to find somewhere to sit and drink this as the area was really busy. Eventually we found a seat over at the covered area next to the entrance to Hagrids. I couldn't find an opportunity to take a photo as we were standing most of the time.

We were pretty much done by lunchtime again so ate in Citywalk on the way out. We couldn’t decide where but as we passed Bubba Gumps decided just to eat there. It was quiet so I didn’t bother flashing the Landry card and we had no more rewards left to use. I didn’t fancy anything deep fried and breaded or battered so I went for Jenny’s Catch which is tilapia in lobster butter with mashed potato. This was lovely and a nice change from fried stuff.

I have no idea what these are for.

Marie went for the fried chicken which comes with mash but she substituted for fries. She really enjoyed this too. I had a small piece and it was nice.

This came to $53 with the AP discount including tip and 2 soft drinks. Next year I think we’ll keep a birthday reward for eating here instead of Y&Y twice.

After another unsuccessful shopping trip, this time at The Florida Mall we got caught in I4 traffic so decided to come off at Disney Springs. I suggested POFQ for dinner and a look around as I’ve always fancied it. We decided on POR over it a few years before but always wondered if it was the wrong choice.

We split up in the Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory and I went and got fried chicken with 3 sides. There were other options which I don’t remember. According to the menu on MDE it’s bbq ribs, blackened ribeye and sustainable fish but I don’t remember seeing those. I think there was brisket? Anyway I chose mashed potato, green beans and mac n cheese.

This was nice although I always find chicken on the bone hard to eat and there wasn’t a huge amount of meat.

Marie had lasagne which came with a breadstick. It was quite a big portion. She said the breadstick was stale so she didn’t eat it.

I think we had our mugs with us and I was excited to be presented with the Coke Freestyle machine. So excited I think I just got diet Coke!
Marie swapped her drink for a snack. We have been desperate to try beignets for many years and never got round to it. This was our opportunity! This is an excellent use of a snack credit as you get 3 decent sized beignets.

We shared one between us after dinner then got a to go box for the other two. While we were doing that and disposing of the trays etc I left my handbag lying at the table. What a panic I had when I realised. It had been about 10 seconds but I knew that would be enough for an opportunist. It was still there so panic over.
These were awesome! I’m not sure how we’ve managed all these years without beignets! We didn’t get back to POFQ but are now considering trying to switch to POFQ next year!
We had the other two beignets later with a hot chocolate we got from Sassagoula Floatworks as we left POFQ.

Credits used – 2 QS
OOP – probably about $100 at a guess

Day 12 - Pecos Bill, Les Halles Boulangerie-Patisserie

We were originally going to do a late MK day today but we changed our mind and just headed there in the morning. Breakfast was a mini muffin and chocolate croissant again (don’t worry, they run out soon!).

With such a pitiful breakfast we were hungry soon. We planned to get the Cheeseburger Spring Rolls and just pay for them. I thought we were going to be thwarted as they didn’t have any however the CM said they’d have them in 15 minutes. We went for Dole Whip while we waited. This time I got just raspberry Dole Whip with pineapple juice. Marie got pineapple/pineapple as usual. We were able to get a table at what we call the Aladdin seats next to the shop at the Aladdin meet & greet and enjoyed them there.

By now the spring roll cart had Cheeseburger ones so we got a portion of 2 to share. These cost $7.50 so not bad for a quick snack. Our table was gone so we had to stand an eat them. We really enjoyed these and it’s a shame they’re not on the dining plan.

After a few rides we were ready for lunch. We were in Frontierland so just headed to Pecos Bill. We hadn’t managed this trip yet and we really enjoy it. We mobile ordered again and Marie grabbed a table while I went to get the food. As usual it was busy here but there were a few tables.

I got the fajitas which were chicken and pork with rice, beans and vegetable. I grabbed some cheese and sour cream from the fixins bar.

Marie got the taco trio getting pork, chicken and beef.

We enjoyed this and it was really filling.

We decided for dinner to go back to Epcot. We hadn’t really thought too much about what we were getting. We considered some F&W booths and agreed we wanted to get the Corned Beef again. We got one each this time. It wasn’t as good as before. I’m not sure what was different but something was.

We decided against F&W and instead went to France to get some Lobster Bisque from Les Halles. This was totally nothing to do with the fact that Marie had discovered they also did beignets here! The ones here were filled with Nutella. We used 2 QS credits and got 2 lobster bisque, a baguette, a large diet coke and 2 beignets. We got the beignets to go.

These fold up cups are so handy!

This was really nice. A full baguette is probably more than we need but it’s a snack credit whether you get a full one or a half so I say get a full one! The lobster bisque was as nice as any others I’d had, nicer than the Boathouse in my opinion.
We had the beignets later with a cup of tea.

Credits used – 4 QS, 4 snacks
OOP - $7.50

Your meal at Bubba Gumps looks gorgeous. We really love it there, Nik always has the chicken with extra gravy on the side.

We really liked POFQ when we visited this year (we’d only ever been in the dark before or passed on the boat) and I think it looks a lovely resort. Really excited to be staying there this year.

Pecos Bills looks so good, we love it there.

Great use of snack credits in France, the beignets sound lovely, I am adding them to my list for next year.

I agree there is no point going to Universal if your not having butterbeer-I would still love to be able to try the hot butterbeer...one day! We had the butterbeer fudge for the first time this year so at least I had a butterbeer fix to bring home😊
I can’t believe you have never had a beignet before, it was great to stay at FQ and sample them frequently-they are even nicer dipped in the strawberry sauce, how were the Nutella beignets?
I could just eat the chicken from Bubbas we did Cowfish for a change so I missed out on the chicken.

Yes I was really pleased with Bubba Gumps this time. Previous trips I’ve had fried shrimp and it just feels like too much grease.

POFQ is our last moderate resort so I really feel we need to try it!

We’ve not been to Sassagoula Floatworks for years and back then we didn’t know beignets existed (I think we went for breakfast). We’ve just not managed to get back but I think that was where having QSDP helped as we wanted to try somewhere other than DS.

The Nutella beignets were nice but the original ones were better.

I think the dinner we had at Les Halles was one of the best! Sometimes it’s the simple things!

Day 13 - Woody's Lunchbox & Sharks Underwater Grill

We had a DHS day planned today and got up early to get there for at least some of EMH. We had the last of the mini muffins for breakfast.

For some reason I haven’t made any notes about second breakfast but I’ve found a photo of the brisket potato barrels from Woody’s Lunch Box so presumably that’s what we had!

We had booked Sharks Underwater Grill in SeaWorld for dinner as part of Orlando Magical Dining month. In order to take advantage of the time in the park afterwards that comes as part of the package we had booked 3pm so didn’t want to have a big lunch. In the end we didn’t have lunch at all.

Mid-morning we got a blue milk each in Batuu. This is definitely nicer than the green and this time we sat and enjoyed them. One thing for Batuu is that there are plenty of seating options.

Before we left the park I got another Num Num cookie for later.
We stopped off at Café Rix when back at the resort and got cinnamon rolls for the next days breakfast. Marie also got one of these massive Boston cream eclairs. We had a cup of tea in the room with the cookie and éclair. Marie was disappointed to find it wasn’t fresh cream. I could’ve told her that and in hindsight maybe should have said before she bought it.

We chilled for a wee while then headed to SeaWorld around 2.15pm. Last year we’d left it late and misjudged how long it would take us so were quite late. I wanted to avoid that this year but stupidly chose to go via I4 again and it took us 50 minutes to get to SeaWorld due to an accident. We then waited 25 minutes for someone to check us in and take us to the restaurant. Because you don’t need park entry you need to be escorted to the restaurant by a staff member so we had no choice but to wait. It was really hot and I hadn’t brought much water so we were getting really irritated with the wait. Eventually someone turned up and was so nice I couldn’t complain.

We were walked to Sharks Underwater Grill and checked in there. We had a little wait for a table but not long. Last year we had been sat in a booth facing the tank but this time we were at a table side on. You could still see it but it wasn’t as good a view and the seats weren’t as comfortable.

The menu is a set menu and three courses for $35 although drinks are extra. Sorry for the flash reflection.

I ordered the Lobster Bisque (now number 4). I thought Marie would too but she went for the Coconut Chicken Tenders.

Mine was lovely although I think on a par with the one from Les Halles.
The chicken tenders were weird. The coconut and the banana sauce didn’t really go together and it just felt like an odd combination. The chicken was nice but the whole thing didn’t work for either of us.
For mains we both ordered the filet mignon well done. It arrived medium well which I can cope with but it annoys me. I prefer not to have any pink. We couldn’t be bothered with sending it back and it was a nice steak but not as good as The Yachtsman and would have been better cooked the way we’d asked.

Dessert for me was the chocolate cake and Marie got the key lime pie. Just as last year we didn’t really enjoy these. Mine was partly because I was full.

This came to $96 including soft drinks and tip. I think compared to the meal we’d paid double that for at The Yachtsman it was clearly a better deal but not as nice. Not sure The Yachtsman was $90 worth of nicer though!

We didn’t have any more food that day as we were very full from dinner.

Credits used – 2 QS, 6 snacks (2 for tomorrow)
OOP - $96

Day 14 - Westward Ho, Be Our Guest & Chicken Guy

We were up fairly early again today and had our cinnamon rolls in the room. These were nice but probably better fresh.

We got a bit grumpy looking for second breakfast as there wasn’t much open close by. I fancied Sleepy Hollow but as it was just opening there was a big queue and when Marie saw the menu didn’t fancy any of it anyway. I checked MDE and saw that Westward Ho sold muffins. Of course we then had to find it. I took a guess at one of the kiosks in Frontierland and was right.

They had a breakfast sandwich, candied bacon and a choice of muffins.

I got blueberry and Marie chocolate chip.We used 4 snack credits to get a muffin and coffee each and sat at the tables at Pecos Bill to eat them.

This was a bit awkward as I think people then thought it was open and tried to get in. Anyway we sat there for a wee while relaxing as we didn’t want to ride Splash Mountain until close to the end of the FP window.

A couple of hours later we were passing Cheshire Café when I pointed out I’d wanted to try a Cheshire Cat Tail for a while so Marie suggested we half one since it was nearly lunch time. We used a snack credit for this and managed to get one of the few tables next to this kiosk. I enjoyed this and I think half was just enough at this point. Next time I want a whole one for second breakfast though!

We had Be Our Guest booked for 12.30pm. We like to do both breakfast and lunch while on DDP as it’s good value although it’s not my favourite QS. I also needed to have my Masters Cupcake!
We pre ordered again so were given a yellow rose and directed to the left hand queue to pay. Marie decided to get an alcoholic drink this time and chose a Mimosa. We were given a red rose for this to put at the table.

We had to sit at a table for 4 as none of the tables for 2 were clean which I felt a bit guilty about. We waited ages on our food and about 3 CMs stopped to look at our receipt before we eventually got our food.
We were boring and ordered what we usually do – I got the turkey baguette without the Dijon mustard and Marie the Croque Monsieur. I also used a snack credit for the cupcake.

Mine wasn’t great. The baguette was hard and the fries were a bit rubbish. The cupcake was fab however.

To be honest I don’t know if I’m bothered about lunch here next year. I like breakfast, especially if you can get a pre park opening slot but there’s not much on the lunch menu I fancy. Marie might moan about no croquet monsieur but we can get that in France!

Credits left at this point.

Dinner was at Disney Springs again as we had unfinished business. To be honest I wanted to go to D-Luxe Burger again but we hadn’t made it to Chicken Guy yet so we headed there. It wasn’t busy and we were served straight away. There was a lot on the menu we fancied despite this only really selling fried chicken!

I decided on the Sauce Boss which is a chicken sandwich with 2 sauces. The combo counts as a QS credits so this included fries and a soft drink. I got ranch and honey mustard as my sauces.

Marie went for the 3 tenders combo and got spicy mayo and garlic parmesan. We also shared a Mac Daddy Mac n Cheese which we were able to use a snack credit for. This came out first so we kind of ate it as a starter.

This was all really nice and we enjoyed it. I’ve seen a couple of bad reviews but I was happy with the quality and flavour of the food. We’ll definitely be back here.

We had a few QS credits left due to the amount of food we paid OOP for so headed to both Goofy’s Candy Co and Ghirardelii to use some of them up. Again Ghirardelli assigns a monetary value to QS and snack credits, around $18 for QS and just under $6 for a snack. We got some of the big bags and filled a tin each as we wanted to choose our own plus thought the tins would make nice gifts if we decided to give some of the chocolate squares away at Christmas. Any shortfall was made up with the little packets of two squares. It takes it a bit of toing and froing with the staff and popping back to grab something or swapping stuff but we managed!
We wanted to keep at least 4 for our last day in case we wanted a QS breakfast so we didn’t use all of them and ended up with 7 for our last day. We only had a couple of snack credits though and we used one at Chicken Guy.

Credits used – 4 QS, 6 snacks (plus 1 snack and 4 QS on stuff to take home).

Day 15 - Kusafiri Bakery & D-Luxe Burger

A bit sparse today as I stopped taking photos after we left Disney. We were up early to take advantage of EEMH at AK and didn’t bother with breakfast in the room. Our first food was the cinnamon roll from Kusafiri Bakery and again we used a QS credit to get this plus two cappuccinos.

This was one of the cappuccinos.

If we could have been bothered we’d have complained but they weren’t that great anyway so we just drank what we got and left.

We spent a couple of hours in AK then decided we’d go back to DS to use the rest of our credits. I was determined to get another D-Luxe burger and Marie hadn’t actually had a burger there yet so we agreed on there for lunch. Unfortunately there seemed to be only one person serving and the queue was quite big so it took a while. Someone ahead also seemed to be having problems accessing their credits so that added to the wait. Eventually someone else appeared at the other till and we were served. We both just went for the Classic Cheeseburger and we paid OOP for one portion of fries as we had no snacks left. These were around $5 I think.

Again these were excellent although I preferred the BBQ burger I had the previous time.

We now had 4 credits left. We discussed going to Earl of Sandwich to get something for the airport but both agreed we probably wouldn’t eat them. Instead we went back to Ghirardelli and used them there. This is the total haul.

Our next food was at the airport. Our flight was 6.15pm and we’d already had lunch. We weren’t ready for anything big and would have dinner on the flight. I had spotted an Auntie Anne’s Pretzels in the departure lounge, somewhere we’ve never managed. I wandered along and bought us some mini pretzel dogs and some pretzel bites with cheese dip and cream cheese (this never got eaten). We didn’t eat all of these in the end but I really enjoyed the mini pretzel dogs. Although they were quite greasy and twice the hot dog slid out and fell on the floor.
Internet photos as I was too embarrassed to take food photos in the departure lounge!

We were in PE on the way home and dinner on the flight was a choice of beef stroganoff, Hawaiian chicken and I think a paneer curry. I think I had the beef and Marie the chicken but my notes aren’t great here. This was edible.

Breakfast pretty decent compared to previous trips. Generally I find this something horrible when you already feel a bit rubbish but we had some kind of overnight oats thing which had a sachet of honey. I need someone to tell me what it was as it lovely! We also got the choice of a bacon roll or egg and cheese bagel. We both chose the bacon and again this was decent. Overall quite a good airline breakfast for a change.
