We stayed at the Westin St. Francis in Union Square. We really liked the hotel and the area felt very safe and could walk to most areas. If we didn’t feel like walking we used Uber which was great.

Hi - per previous replies there seems to be 3 'main' areas that people on here recommend.

The motor inns - further out along Lombard St, which get good reviews, are relatively cheap and offer parking, but at the slight inconvenience of being a bit further out from the places you'd want to see.

Fishermans Wharf - as someone mentioned, this is tourist central which is either a plus or a negative depending on your view. Plenty of hotels and things to do.

Union Square area - in the heart of the city centre close to all the main shops etc. Again plenty of hotels.

We've stayed in the Union Square area both times we've been, mainly due to getting better deals on hotels compared to FW but think either would make a good base.

We have booked the hotel zephyr at fisherman’s wharf. It was a little cheaper than the Argonaut which was our other preference and we know someone who stayed there and recommend it. It wasn’t cheap though and we will be handing back the hire car as parking is astronomical. We had booked Columbus motor inn as we hear lots of good things on here but by handing back the car we managed to get the zephyr for not too much more.

We stay at Fishermans Wharf, lots to see and do and feels safe. Recommend the Hollwood cafe for breakfast but there are lots of other good places too. Union Square is a short tram ride away. The first trip we did we made the mistake of picking up our car when we arrived, it cost a fortune to park and we didn't use it for the four days we were there - haven't made that mistake again

We are going for the first time in May and staying at the Argonaut. Like many others we will be handing back our hire car on arrival due to the astronomical car park charges.

Lombard Inn is a fav of ours, free parking, 15 min walk to fishmans wharf, an uber is about $8 to and from. We drove around a lot on San Fran, parking outside the Disney museum was quite cheap for San Fran, we also used online parking company, parked at ferry pier for $15 for the day, again it was a 5 - 7 min walk back to fishmans wharf, so look at online if you want parking around the tourist bits, you can get it cheap in advance

There may be some things you would want a car for. Perhaps nappy valley or a trip up the coast.

Quite a few folk have recommended not picking up the car till we’re leaving San Francisco, this is great advice for us as I’d have automatically looked to have picked the car up at the airport on arrival.

Use the BART from SFO Int if staying up Union Sq way. Fishermens/Columbus etc is a bit more difficult as the nearest stop is, I believe Embarcadero. you may consider an uber.. or if really adventurous, the BART to Powell (2/3 of the way) and then the Cable car down to Fishermens (or an uber or taxi).

If you are staying in the Union Sq area, there is an Avis/Budget just a few blocks away that is very close to the Bay Bridge Ramp.We walked to it with suitcases. Using this, you only drive around a single block before you are on the Bridge out of Town (bottom deck).

Carparking at our 3 star Hotel would have been $75 a night.

I would definitely recommend the Fisherman’s Wharf area over Union Square.
We stayed in the Columbus Motor Inn last year and would highly recommend it. Free parking too which is worth a lot in San Fran
