I'm 52 so obviously had my mmr vaccinations years ago, how long does the vaccine cover you for I wonder , as adults do we need to be vaccinated again. I work in a pre school and a parent took her child to be vaccinated last week and the parent ended up having one too. I don't know the reasons why she did though.

They reckon those born pre 1957 are immune because they probably had the illness anyhow.

Wide sweeping statement!

The big risk according to Google is those born 1957 up to 1967 although there are many variations on those dates etc.

It goes on to say a simple blood test will determine if you are covered but I don't know if a GP Surgery will carry that out.

Interesting question.

I'm 55 and MMR vaccination did not exist. If you were born before 1970 it is unlikely you were immunised.

I had mumps and German measles as a child - luckily not measles - we were on an island, so more isolated.

Interesting , I was born 1954 and I clearly remember having the measles , it was awful , the most I remember about it was the hallucinations I experienced , most frightening part of it , I don’t even remember being given antibiotics or anything , just remember being very very ill and I would have been around 6 or 7 at the time .

I was just going to ask why people are only commenting in the context of children. There must be far more unvaccinated adults around.

I am surprised you had MMR jab years ago. I am 49 and being vaccinated for mumps or measles was unheard of when I was a child. It was normal for girls only to receive a rubella jab at about age 13 which was organised through school.

I had both mumps and measles as a child so assume I have immunity, however I have looked at the statistics for measles cases since 1940 and they are big (varying between 100k to 300k per year) but no way big enough to assume that most people caught it.

That sounds like the BCG vaccine, which protects you against TB. I had mine in primary school but was tested again when I started university with the six needles on my forearm and was found to still have sufficient protection.

I’m a similar age to you and had measles pre school age (vaguely remember being kept in a darkened room) as well as German measles (twice ) and chicken pox.

I think I've learnt this morning that I'm not vaccinated , I work in a pre school too, so I'll be looking into getting vaccinated then I think.
The flu jab is given out quick enough so we'll see.

Hmm, I though that 'scar' was from the TB jab, I have never had the TB jab therefore do not have the tell tell scar.
