Amsterdam Dec 2018 - Day 1 Arrivial & Evening Canal Tour

Pre-Trip Report found here!

Day 1 - Arriving and Evening Canal Tour

Monday 10th Dec –

It was luckily not too early of a start this morning as our flight wasn’t until 11am. We had stayed at my house the night before as my dad was off work and had offered to take us to the airport.

We arrived just after 9am and checked our bag in. We were flying with easyjet from Glasgow and I had decided to pay for one 23kg bag between us as we were going for 5 days.

Security was short and sweet and we were soon in duty free browsing the aftershave selection. As it was a trip for Mick’s 30th I told him I’d treat him to some new aftershave. He was indecisive and told me to pick, so I choose Dior Sauvage – really nice a good choice by me ☺ and he liked it as well.

I had booked the upperdeck lounge as I’d recently been to the one in Dublin and it was fab – the Glasgow one not too much. The alcohol on offer was quite poor and the food offering was so/so. It was really quiet so we got a drink each and some bacon rolls. I had some porridge and tablet after and a mini Irn Bru.

Our flight was delayed 30 mins and we headed down to board. From take off to landing it was only an hour! We got through and had to wait to go through the electronic passport gates - that took a bit of time. Luckily our bag was waiting for us and we headed towards the train station (within the airport) Tickets were €10 each for a return on the train to Amsterdam central we were a bit unsure of what train to take but luckily someone saw our confused looks and pointed us to the right one. It was very quiet and only took 20 mins to get in.

We were staying at the Ink Hotel, which is just off Nieuwezjids Voorburgwal, and only an 8 min walk from Amsterdam Central station. The hotel was having it’s work’s Christmas night out and all the staff had presents and were dressed in Christmas jumpers. We got checked in quickly as I had filled out an online check in form a few days prior and I choose to upgrade our room to a one-bedroom suite instead of just a room. The hotel used to be the home of a Dutch newspaper and is themed around this fact. It’s a lovely hotel and one I would highly recommend if you go to Amsterdam.

I had mentioned it was my boyfriend’s birthday and they had filled the room with balloons and the bed had a bottle of prosecco and two glasses on it and loads of chocolate love hearts all over the bed and in the bathroom. They also gave us a tote bag and some snacks too a very nice touch which we appreciated.

One of Mick’s traditions is to visit the hotel bar of any place he stays straight away. I was able to convince him to go up to the room first and get changed so we could ditch the huge suitcase lol. We then headed down to the library bar and ordered a Dutch beer for him and a Hendricks gin and lemonade for me. The bar in here is one of my favorites – so quiet and relaxed with a warm fire and cozy sofa’s to sit on. You also get popcorn and nuts to snack on too. We enjoyed our drinks and then headed out for a wander and to get some food.

We went to a noodle bar called Wok to Walk, which wasn’t far from our hotel and hit the spot. €22 for two noddle pots and two cans of juice. We then wandered about the area taking in the sights and realized we maybe hadn’t brought as many winter clothes as we needed so a trip to Primark in search of gloves, hats and scarves! It was also really sunny and we had both forgotten our sunglasses but none were found in Primark. Purchases made we headed to a corner shop by the hotel to get some drinks and snacks to keep in the room.
Wow extortion doesn’t cover it! We got a can of Monster, two cans of Coke, two bags of Haribo, crisps and some chocolate for €35!

We got back to the hotel had a quick rest then it was back out for our evening canal tour. I had booked this as during December, Amsterdam holds a light festival, and the lights are all visible via the canals so the perfect way to see them.

It was a bit of a walk to the dock – around 30 mins and we arrived a bit late – oops! Managed to get on the next boat no hassle. It was very relaxing we got some drinks and it wasn’t too busy so we had a booth to ourselves.

The Christmas lights were beautiful, photos not so great as through a window but you could go out to the back of the boat if you wished. We got back off and took a wander down to the red light district (about 30 min walk) so surprising to see something like that existing and I thought it was just one street but it was actually quite a large area. We had a look about and then headed back to the hotel about 11pm for a quick drink in the bar and then bed.

Thanks for reading! xo.

What a busy day! Love the lights!

The snacks seemed very expensive though - surprising when the noodles were so reasonable!
