NB this was 20 years ago
we went end of august and like florida can be a tad wet in the afternoons, think we had 2 days of constant rain / washouts.. its also hurricane season.. im sure you aware of this im sure a lot has changed , when we visited the rain forest cafe was literally just opened i can remember taking a trip to isla mujeres for the day, lovely peaceful island with no cars ! we didnt goto chichen iktza due to the weather the day we had booked, roads flooded iirc. felt very american & not very mexican if that makes sense admittedly we didnt get out & about much, spent days on the beach & nights in the bars/eateries |

Stayed outside Cancunat El Dorado Royale did a self drive speedboat ride across the lagoon and then snorkelled. Chitchen Itza worth a trip we climbed it as it was still open but I believe you can’t do that now as it’s being eroded . Also did trainer for a day with dolphins in Cancun in the sea it was fantastic it was much cheaper the DC and better IMO. There’s also Xcaret which is great for a day . Just a heads up we were offered drugs everywhere we went in Cancun so be prepared for that also, iguanas were everywhere even at bus stops in Cancun !Loved the Mariachi bands too always make me smile Really enjoyed our holiday the standard of the hotels is fab and the people were lovely . As already said (again it was about 20 years ago when we went), chitchen itza was worth a visit, dolphin swim at Isla mujeres was way better than the DC one (although I don’t know if it’s still the same) and Xcarat was fab - we did sea venture there and it was great.

Another who's advice is years old, also enjoyed Chichen Itza (take a water spray for your face, there's no escape there from the sun) and we had a day trip out to Cozumel to the eco park for snorkelling which was definitely a highlight.
We stayed at The Moon Palace which back then was very remote and crowded.

We have been to Cancun a few years ago and our best experience was a day trip to Isla Mujeres. We just caught the ferry across and then once on the island we hired a golf cart. This is the absolute best way to see the whole island in a day and besides that is was just brilliant. Everyone just zips about on golf carts and there’s loads of places to stop off at and have a drink and some of the beaches are incredible!
If you can while you are there make your way down to the Riveria Maya, especially Tulum. It’s a massive trek from where you are but so worth it. We absolutely love Mexico, the food, the people, the weather, it’s amazing! Have a wonderful time

September is baby turtle time. If you see a member of staff with a long cane poking in it what looks like a crater with tyre tracks going in and out, they are looking for turtle eggs. They dig them up and replant them in a safe place. We stalked our guy for a few days and helped dig up hundreds of eggs. On our last morning we watched him dig them back up as they had hatched. He allowed us to gently handle them.
We were round the corner on the long bit of the 7, so I'm not sure if the turtles visit where you are. Also a day trip to snorkle in a cenote is a great way to get out of the torpor you'll get into |

The ruins at Tulum are amazing int he Riviera Maya, cannot recommend it highly enough, less touristy than Chichen Itza (though you really should go, the main temple alone is worth the hawkers everywhere) but in a beautiful location with lots to see.
Its pretty windy a lot of the year on the coast, so if you have sensitive eyes take drops, I suffered from watery painful eyes sitting out during the day which put a dampener on it and the chemist was lacking on something to help. |

I went 17 years ago and had a day at Xel-Ha. A bit like Discovery Cove in that you get a designated time for a dolphin swim and it was free food and drink all day. Much more of a ‘natural’ lagoon setting though which led straight out to the sea. It was a coach trip from our hotel the Fiesta Americana.
Also spent an evening in Coco Bongos which is where some of the film The Mask was set. That was good fun but I had a lot more energy in those days! |
