Some (not all) gas stations charge more for credit card than cash.

A lot of gas stations will not accept a UK card for pay at pump (asks for a zip code which you don’t have), you then have to go in and leave your card with them (or leave cash deposit).

I use Walmart and no problem there using revolut for pay at pump (and no premium versus cash) as it doesn’t ask for a zip code. The card shows $1 initially then a couple of days later the full value bills to the card.

Where we have had to pay inside, I have sent my wife in to leave deposit in cash and then pay with card once filling is complete. No problem at all and I’m not leaving my card unattended.

Aren't petrol stations often a hot spot for card cloning too?

our last trip i had some cash , but everything was paid on card including parking, icecreams, shopping , snacks etc. I even taught some of the disney staff something as they did not know we had touch on our cards and their readers would accept them.

I pay for postcards and stamps with cash. Yes, I do still send postcards! My friends like the personal touch

Cash only in restaurants for me. Had my card cloned a couple of times over the years. Last time 3 years ago only used it in 1 restaurant as low on cash and the card company called me a couple of days later saying they had stopped card due to suspicious activity.

Not true, you don't have to leave your card. You tell them how much fuel you want in $$ and they take that off your card. You fill your car, if you use all that you have paid for fine. if you haven't then you walk back in and they refund the difference to your card.

I'd also add that now the USA is adopting Chip+PIN, more often than not your card never leaves your sight (or even your hand) when paying for stuff in a supermarket / gas station / shop.

The biggest risk is in a restaurant where the server will often take the card away to swipe it through the till. That said, if you ask to accompany them to the till with the card, they will let you if they are not trying to clone your card, as the tip element of your bill is very important to them.

Back to the OP's question - we take very little cash to Florida. For a 2 week visit we'd probably take $400 maximum. Wherever possible [which is most places] we pay by card & then pay off the bill in full when back in the UK.

Is this an Orlando thing?

We visit 3-4 times a year & pay for petrol with our card.
We go in, tell them how much we want on which pump & they put that through, we chip & pin it then walk out & pump that amount & drive away. The cashier doesn’t touch our card; it is in our hand at all times.

We’ve never had to leave our card inside with them or a cash deposit although we don’t do Orlando.

I just send my wife in with the card while I pump the "gas". She doesn't let the card out of her sight.

We always have some cash on us in case we want to buy something from some of the stalls in disney as they don't take cash/magic band.

We always use our Halifax Clarity card as we don't care much for Revolt however we also always have another card as a back up too.
