How would you plump cushions that are stitched to the frame (leather sofa)?

It sounded like he is going to try and do something with it there and then as he said he was going to bring filling and foam.

Whilst it was not the most expensive suite it certainly was not cheap at £2,500 in the sale. Unfortunately it is not in warranty any more.

We have been married for nearly 50 years and have never had this problem before. I am so disappointed.

So long would you expect the stuffing in a lounge suite to last? Are we being unreasonable in expecting more?
If I paid 2.5k for a suite I would most certainly expect it to last longer than 3.5yrs!

I would be taking this up with the company as under the sale of goods act it has to be fit for purpose and last a reasonable length of time. Whats a reasonable length of time, is anyone's guess but I think you should have a good chance to fight the case, as surely a suite is expected to last more than 3.5yrs?

Ive never known anyone to need their furniture re stuffing after such a short time.

Definitely not fibre.

I will update the thread when the furniture restorer has been.

Our M&S corner unit went soft where Dh always sits within a year. M&S sent out a rep who replaced all the fibre cushions with high quality foam. This worked for about 9-10 years. We then had it reupholstered and the upholsterer replaces the webbing on the whole sofa with extra firm, but we didn’t replace the cushions, just had them rewrapped. That was about 6 years ago. Recently I saw a hack online and tried it - basically it was putting slats under the cushion like a bed frame. This is working well. Basically because of the set up of our room, the seat that has the problem is the most used seat and by the heaviest person in the family (my dh) so it was always going to be the bit to go first. I think you have to take usage and by whom into consideration when asking how long a sofa will last.

I have just spoken to the upholsterer. He said that “foam” nowadays does not mean foam rubber as rubber was removed some years ago due to fire regulations. I can perfectly understand the need for this but I am still annoyed. I am having difficulty with the conflicting feelings.

The suite was guaranteed for three years but not the filling! To me, that indicates that the filling is not expected to last.

The furniture restorer came today with a new piece of foam from the manufacturers. The old piece of foam was totally knackered. A five inch thickness could easily be compressed between two hands and the hands would touch! The new one - great - and now the sofa seat is just like new, as it should be. Three hours work. And the cost? Only £135 in total! So worth it. We thought it would be a lot more.

He gave us a quote for cleaning the wool carpet in the hall, landing and stairs. £65. So I grabbed at it and he is going to ring with a date. Honestly, it isn’t worth us trying to do it ourselves at that price and we have a Bissell carpet cleaner.

My sister had trading standards people in once because a new sofa lost all its shape within twelve months. He spent 45 minutes pummelling the cushions into shape and deemed that was all that was required on a daily basis. No case to answer for the manufacturer.

That's ridiculous who would buy a sofa that would be 45 mins of work a day. Shows how manufacturers are getting away with it.
