My thoughts are with the CM's Family and Friends. We never do know what each day holds. RIP..

This is very unusual for Disney, I understand they have aan excellent safety record

There must have been a problem with the monorail as I wouldnt have thought it went fast enough to do the damage that has been shown from the pictures.

Very sad for the family of the driver that died...

I was there during the last couple of weeks and with Extra Magic Hours the Magic Kingdom often stayed open VERY late, 3am on a couple of days. So the monorail running on the MK resort loop at 2am would not be unusual. On the MK/Epcot line I am not so sure why it was still running unless Epcot was open until 1am in which case the Epcot monorail would also be running until 2am at least. This would not be an unreasonable closing time on July 4th.

Edited at 08:03 PM. Reason: typo

According to CM News13 the driver was only 21 years old. It was said to be probably the last run of the night and the other driver and 5 passengers it hit were on the opposite end of their train and therefore unhurt.

Very sad and my sympathy goes out to his family.

On the Epcot line the Monorail is travelling at least as fast as the traffic on the highways that run parallel to it, I would estimate about 40/50 mph - certainly enough to do damage. The monorail trains are at least 20 years old though, do they have crumple zones? If not even a 10 or 20 mph crash could be fatal. At the TTC I would have thought they travelled much slower as all monorail traffic stops there.

This is awful. Don't we take safety in WDW for granted, and isn't it a shock when something as reliable and superbly well run goes so badly wrong. How terrible for the family, and the WDW family too...

Indeed we do take it for granted that the happiest place in the world is also the safest place in the world. My heart goes out the the family and friends of the CM who lost his life
