This is a really difficult one isn't it. I travel to Europe several times a year and long haul every other year. I've yet to hear an announcement regarding nuts.
As a family we always take snacks and a little food on board (longhaul) in case any of us don't like what is being served. Nuts, crisps, sweets, mini pork pies or cheese, chocolate and fruit. Anything left over, either left as rubbish on the plane and put into bins on landing in the USA. So we don't carry any food stuffs prior to customs and security. We would of course, if anyone near us had an allergy from the foods we carry, not eat them and keep them packed away. Difficult for the crew to monitor every one on board and ask them not to eat anything with nuts in, as sometimes you just don't know if you had trace elements of nuts in your food. I suppose if it was a sever allergy case, you would politely ask all people sitting within a few rows of yours to not eat their own food, just in case of any trace element and I'm sure they would oblige. A difficult situation to get around I suppose.

That's the problem, we've been told by specialists that there is no such thing as a "severe nut allergy". You just have a nut allergy, one reaction could be very mild, the next reaction could be fatal.
I don't mean to sound like a drama queen but I don't think most people appreciate how dangerous having a nut allergy could be.

You wouldn't need to ask people not to eat their own food in case their food contained trace elements. I don't think there's much chance of a trace element becoming airborne, but I don't think that anyone should open a packet of nuts on flight, even if there's no one with an allergy sitting next to you, you could leave traces everywhere for the next flight.

Don't forget, if someone has an allergic reaction on a flight, the plane would be forced to land as soon as possible, therefore inconveniencing everyone on the flight. Airlines still serve nuts though.

We've just flown Thomas Cook to Turkey - they did this announcement both ways.

TBH I dont know why they even bother serving nuts these days - I mean who really needs a small bag of nuts when they get on?

(Of course I understand the announcement about other passengers eating nuts theyve brought on.)

I have a very bad reaction to pet hair (dogs specifically but any animal with long hair can get me)

Should we insist that animals are not allowed on any public transport or public building just in case I should go there after them?

Nut allergies are a difficult one because for some diets nuts really are the only alternative to things they can't eat - so which allergy wins?

Is there a chance you going to die if you come into contact with pet hair?
If not, then I guess that the nut allergy wins.

We had an announcement on a Thomson (TUI) flight in 2015. Didn't get one in 2016 but maybe there was no-one on the flight with an allergy. I recall the 2015 announcement vividly because a lady sat across the aisle from us took a massive pack of peanuts out of her bag and proceeded to open them the minute she sat down on the plane. DH leaned over to her and said something along the lines of, "maybe you should wait to see if they announce there's someone on board with a nut allergy" but she just shrugged and opened them anyway. A few minutes later, along comes the announcement. Cue the woman very quickly and sheepishly putting the bag of nuts back in her bag. Thankfully there was no medical emergency on the flight but I've always remembered how that lady was completely oblivious to what might have happened

I would urge people to read about The Amy May Trust to find out about the potential impact of exposure to nuts and why this can be particularly problematic on flights, where, for want of a better word, peanut 'dust' can be in the air that is recirculated through the plane throughout the flight. I don't have a nut allergy and nor do any of my family, but I would happily support a complete ban on nuts on flights for the safety of others. If smokers can manage a flight without a cigarette, I'm sure nut eaters can manage a flight without them.

We were buying our plane snacks yesterday (like to plan ahead) my DH picked up nuts in chocolate - I guess it’s easily done. We didn’t buy them as I was aware of allergies but I am sure lots don’t even think about it.

With being in such an enclosed space, recycled air, thousands of miles up and away from anywhere etc why aren't nuts banned full stop, might be controversial but it can save lives also I thought you had to have ingredient lists due to allergies and not just nuts. They ask on booking what dietary requirements are.
