They will but they are powerless to actually stop people eating nuts, or if they wish just getting a bag of nuts and throwing them on the floor.

Asking someone not to do something and them not doing it are two different things

My girlfriend is a Virgin Flight Service Manager & they make the "nuts announcement" if they are aware an affected passenger is onboard. Normally the passenger in question has been in touch with Special Assistance in advance of the flight, so it's all noted on the paperwork & has been mentioned in the pre-flight briefing in the crew room.

Whilst they can make the announcement, they cannot stop any passenger from ignoring it and eating their own nut products. No meals on Virgin are guaranteed nut-free either as they are prepared in kitchens where nut traces may be present.

Also, as has already been mentioned, the risk of cross-contamination from one flight to another is there. A passenger could have been eating nuts throughout the previous flight and wiping their fingers on the seat cover / the tray-table etc. Seat covers are not replaced between flights & if you saw how little time the cleaners get to clean the aircraft (18mins is the average) between flights then the risk is there.

We flew virgin last year and when at the desk they said they do not do an announcement. Which left my sister a nervous wreck , it’s a long journey, so trying to find an airline more friendly towards allergies.

Thanks
We flew Virgin in October and they made the announcement.
