Help needed ! disney and universal packages ?

Hi All., Not sure if posting in the correct place.

Im ready to book flights but want to get some advise first.

We are 7 adults going in August 2019 for 14 nights.

Are interested in all disney parks , a trip to NASA, discovery cove and Universal. Not interested in seaworld, bush gardens etc

Would it be worth staying at a disney resort and say the last 4 days at a universal resort. What are the benefits of onsite. Should we hire a car.

Lastly DIY or could I get a package to match?

Anyone done similar?

Many thanks in advance

We always do something similar and DIY it.
Stay Disney at one end of the holiday, Universal at the other and hire a car for the days in between to visit KSC, beaches and shopping. We stayed at Sapphire Falls last year for 5 nights and found that too long for Universal. At the end of August the parks are less busy so can easily do everything in 2 days plus 1 for Volcano Bay.
This year we bought seasonal annual passes ($5 more than 14 day)and so were able to book Portofino Bay (gorgeous)at a discounted rate. Also a great excuse to go back within the year!
It's fab staying on site and getting the express passes included at the preferred hotels.
We didn't find anywhere that could do a package even close to DIY price.
Hope that helps!

Hi Melanie ,thanks for reply .Yes that does help very much and Its a starting point.
Did you bother with a dining package? And I think 4 days in a universal would be enough.
Are there any other benefits to having an annual pass?
Many thanks

We did similar this summer.

Booked 10 nights On site with free dining direct with Disney (this finishes soon I think). A tip from the Dibb was to book a few days either side of what you might need, then amend the booking for £50 fee once flights and other arrangements are in place. In my case I booked 18 nights, which I amended to 10 Nights just before the final balance was due.

Booked Universal on a hotel booking site, picking deals that could be cancelled/amended. Also went via Quidco for cashback. Ended up doing 4 nights at Portofino in a club room, which saved loads with the free food, snacks, drinks and alcohol (party of 5). And the express passes were really useful even the parks were not busy we don’t like to queue at all!

No need for a car for the whole time IMO. Magical Express to Disney resort, used on site transportation. Lyft taxis for off site within Orlando, eg Discovery Cove, malls. Hire a car when you need it for KSC, beaches etc.

Haven't had a dining package previously but booked our Disney stay for this year with free QS dining. We wouldn't bother otherwise and definitely not at Universal. It may be different for you but as vegetarians we wouldn't get value from it.
Only benefit we used for the seasonal pass was hotel discount but you'd only need one person to have it in order to book it.

We did our first stay 11 nights Disney (with free QSDP) then 3 nights off site with a Universal affiliated hotel spending 2 days universal and final day KSC. On reflection we would have done 3 nights/2 days universal, 2 days/1 night KSC, then 10 nights/9 days Disney. This would have allowed us to hire a car for the first 4 days then drop off after second day at KSC at Orlando airport and catch the magical express to Disney.
Arrival day all we did was walk around our resort and Disney springs, the first few days of waking early would have been wiser spent at Universal where we didn't have fast passes.
