Car hire Insurance HELP

Hi,

Hoping for some info please. We have booked our flydrive with Virgin, at the time of book the Virgin sales woman tried to make me pay £500 pounds to upgrade the insurance from basic to their standard package. However I was a little dubious as to why it is so much when I could go direct to alamo and get car hire and the standard insurance for cheaper than that.
Has anyone any advice on getting independant car insurance with CDW etc? Although I would like to add another driver so would I perhaps be best just not bothering picking up the car (flydrive) and booking myself?

Hope that made sense! I did not want to part with £500s when the woman told me complete lies about how it was illegal to drive on basic insurance

Have a look at alamo/brits as a starting point... that will have all the insurances you need!

There are loads of others to try too... usrentacar , kayak are just two examples

Sorry... no, I have only rented cars with their insurance... or when I go to Ireland I rely on the CDW cover with the travel insurance policy linked to my Bank account.

Not sure I would be confident with a 3rd party insurance policy in the event anything went wrong. I would think you would have to pay out yourself and then claim back from the insurance which is likely to be a right palava to sort out.

Why bother with the Virgin car and all that potential hassle when it can be done in one place by going to one of the car hire firms and you have total peace of mind.

I personally wouldn't dream of using a third party insurance in the USA.
Claims can be many hundreds of thousands of dollars. We know insurance companies will do anything to avoid paying.
Imagine trying to sort out a mess between car hire company and an insurance company - neither of whom is in the UK. Not to mention the legal aspects. No way.

Actually I spoke to them again yesterday and they wanted £609 pounds just for the insurance, So i found a great world wide insurer that does it was £60, and has been well recommended

Cassieamber - the car with part of the flydrive package with virgin. I would be completely bonkers to pay 600 odd with virgin or even alamo itself for insurance when I can get the same cover for 60. And its the same with all insurers, you have to pay the excess

No, most of these stand alone Insurance Companies you pay everything then get the Company to reimburse you!
Just so you are aware you could have to pay out the full value of the car and somebody else's as well plus medical costs etc for the injured party.

Too much risk for me for a few hundred quid!

And this could be tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. More than the limit on my CC.
As you say, far too much risk for me. These are life changing numbers if it all goes pear shape.
