Alaska Excursion Recommendations
We have booked an Alaskan cruise with DCL for August 2020 and I'm already so excited!
I just wondered if anyone had any recommendations for excursions in Juneau, Skagway or Ketchikan please? Thank you

we did this tour in Skagway and really enjoyed it
frontierexcursions/t...iscovery-tour/ For Juneau we caught the local bus and walked to Mendenhall Glacier then just around the local shops. In Ketchican we just walked around the streets, Creek Street is a pretty area. We had spent 8 nights on land before so didn't really feel the need to do a lot more to be honest. Don't suppose you're going to Icy Strait Point / Hoonah? Had a great excursion there - close encounters with bears that I'd highly recommend!

In Juneau we did as dee slack, public bus out to Mendenhall Glacier. In the afternoon we got the cable car up to Mt Roberts for great views and a lovely walk.
In Ketchikan we got the bus to Totem Bight State Historical Park dnr.alaska.gov/parks/units/totembgh.htm and in the afternoon wandered round the town (Creek St etc). |

There's so much do and a lot depends on what you and your family enjoy.
Unlike most cruise excursions which are usually some form of sightseeing Alaskan cruises have lots of activity oriented stuff too. Im not sure what you like so here's a list of things we have done (these were on NCL and its 2 cruises worth) Glacier visits - both driving to them and then helicopter over them and landing on them Misty Fjords plan trip White water rafting Tree level hike and trek with bears and moose Whale watching - Orcas and humpbacks Victoria city tour Lumberjack show Glacier and salmon cook out - with bears Glacier and husky dog sled driving Beer and food tasting So a mix of allsorts. There are always plenty of things to do and if you have a family that wants different things then a cruise is a great way to accommodate that too |

We did whale watching in Juneau with Harv and Marvs and honestly, in all of our cruises, it was the best excursion ever.
They are professional, personable, funny, have a ton of knowledge and are just brilliant. We did a heli trip to the glacier on Ketchikan day, or was it Skagway day - may have been Skagway! It was brilliant and just a 5 min walk from where we berthed. We drank glacier ice, stomped around on the glacier (it's like shattered glass so be careful if you kneel down!) and generally looked around in awe. Skagway Brewing Company is in the town and that did great food and drink. Walk all the way along the 'high street' to the end and it's on the right. We also had 'elephant ears' in Skagway which were divine. They are essentially large deep fried pancakes cut in half so they look like elephant ears. A few different toppings but we just went for sugar. The shop is on a side street to the left as you walk towards Skagway Brewing Company. Have fun! Joa

In Skagway we went with Chilkoot on the Yukon by train and bus tour. It was fantastic! It went on the White Pass railway then were met by our minivan for the rest of the tour. Saw loads of wildlife ( including bears and a wolf!) and lots of incredible scenery with a brilliant guide.
We had the helicopter glacier treck booked for Juneau but it was cancelled in the morning due to fog. This happens a LOT so have a plan B. We ended up getting a bus to the Mendenhall glacier and exploring on our own. Again, just brilliant! At Ketchikan we walked round exploring on our own. We walked to the totem pole museum - can’t remember the proper name, sorry, and just enjoyed exploring slowly by foot. We did a private whale watching trip with Glacier Wind Charters. Omg. Breathtaking! Saw so many whales and sea otters . I don’t know if they run from your ports but otherwise Harv and Marvs will. If you’re able to I would definitely recommend a small group whale watch rather than a big cruise line organised one. You are going to have an incredible time! There’s loads of info on Cruise Critic Alaska Ports of Call which will be helpful too. Enjoy your planning! |

We are on Disney Wonder next August too (10th).
I think we are planning on booking a private boat through Harv and Marv's, as we have a child and so do our friends. And it works out a fair bit cheaper than a DCL excursion.

We are cruising Alaska next August too. Harv and Marv are definitely on my booking list. Not 100% on the other ports. Good to hear Chilkoot recommended tho as we are looking at the train and bus Yukon trip

In Juneau we did an amazing whale-watching trip and then stopped to view Mendenhall glacier on the way back.
Skagway we wandered around the town and then walked some of the Chilkoot trail and did a raft trip back. The trail was steep and goodness knows how the men from the Klondike Goldrush managed it with all their equipment. Tough guys! The weather was actually quite nice for the whole trip but doesn't look great from these pic! |

Another alternative in Skagway- we hired a car and drove into the Yukon.Very easy to do and got away from the crowds.
