Settle an argument - Opening savings tin

My DH and I are currently disagreeing on when to open our savings tin.

We started saving £2 coins in anticipation of our holiday and along the way we have been putting notes in the savings tin too. The question is when do we open it.

We go at the start of Aug and DH wants to wait until the middle/end of July as he likes the suspense of how much is in it - I think it should be done sooner as I want to get the coins bagged up and changed for notes (and know how much money I have to spend )

When does everyone else open theirs?

Open it sooner than later... What happens if the balance falls well short of what you was expecting.

We were a bit useless with our savings jar - kept dipping into it for kids' subs for various clubs & other bits (should've used one without a lid!). In the end i just transferred what we could afford each month from our bank to savings account. The point i'm slowly getting round to is the same view as you - i'd want to know i had enough savings. If these savings are in addition to other savings then i'd find it easier to leave it longer. Hope this helps!

We have a savings tin (well actually an old squash bottle that we burned a coin hole into...). Literally same thing - Mrs always wants to open it so she can be "organised" (Where is the fun in organised?).

Providing you know you have enough saved already for the trip and this is an added bonus- I would wait it out to just before you go. It means you don't start dipping into it for the odd takeaway etc.. - and who knows when you count it up a couple of weeks before and you might be able to plan something on your trip that you never thought you were able too.

If you need to open the savings pot so you actually know how much you have to spend (because you're relying on it) then I'd open however...

Open it now ! Its so exciting opening the money tin but change it to currency as soon as you can so you can't dip in to it. You will know then if your spends are on track or not.

We always use the tins from the poundshop which have to be opened with a can opener, open it about a month before and it is nearly always more than we expected.

I would open it sooner rather than later so that you know what you have. I’ve been using the app plum for our savings, in the last 3 months we saved almost £500 and we haven’t felt it. I would recommend it

Because we weren’t going to Florida I lost interest in mine and it’s probably got £50 in it, I usually have between £450 and £500. I would leave it till early July x

I opened mine last week and we also travel in August. Had just under £200 in 20p and 10p pieces with the odd £5 note thrown in. I was happy with that and we also have a giant whiskey bottle with copper in to count out too x
