FENSA for Velux windows
We’re moving house and have been asked to provide a FENSA certificate for 2 velux windows we had installed earlier this year to replace old leaky ones.
We don’t have a certificate though. I spoke to the guy who fitted them - a FENSA registered tradesman who has done the job for 18 years - and he said that he’s never in all that time provided a FENSA certificate for Velux windows as they don’t require it. Have any dibbers come across this before? When I Google it I can’t find anything that says Velux windows don’t require it. |

I thought all new windows and doors (except porch etc) required a Fensa cert.
You should be able to get one still, so I’d get back to the fitter. Unless he’s correct, but I can’t see why they’d be any different. Just looked and apparently they do need certs if they’re replacements, with building control needed for installing totally new ones.

We had an extension built last year including velux windows. None have a fensa certificate as it was under building permissions. I believe it's only replacement windows that have a fensa certificate.
Just speak to your solicitor you can usually buy an insurance if you need it for the sale instead. It's not expensive. |

Your velux windows would have been covered under the wider extension application so wouldn’t have needed separate certification. Because OP’s are a replacement of existing, they are treated differently

When we sold our house, we needed to provide Fensa certificates for the velux windows we’d had replaced. Can’t remember how we went about getting them though as it was 13 years ago now.

If you haven’t got them then insurance will be the easiest least hassle way to proceed. Your solicitor can put a policy on risk with the click of a couple of buttons.
Don’t worry about it in the slightest just tell the solicitor to get some quotes for insurance and enjoy your day. |

The FENSA scheme applies to replacement glazing so you should have had it for your replacement velux’s.
Contact your local authority building control department about submitting a regularisation application - if they have been installed properly and are the right spec, you should get a certificate relatively quickly.

P.s - personally I’d avoid indemnity policies. If you know you should have had an application/fensa for the installation, an indemnity policy won’t pay out and it will be a waste of your money

I was just thinking this.
When we moved a year ago, we realised we didn’t have the gas certificate for the new boiler we’d had installed. I got in touch with the company and they hadn’t registered it for some reason. Mistakes happen I guess. They registered it and I received the certs in time for moving. I wasn’t going to pay for a policy when I knew we should have the cert. Also happened in the house before that one with some windows. A quick call and it was sorted.
