Time zones on a transatlantic cruise
Could anyone settle a 'discussion' (dispute) do and I have had about what happens with regards to putting your watch back/forward on a transatlantic cruise?
Does it gradually go back by an hour or so over a few mornings or is it all done at once at the destination? If it's is done gradually, how do the young know when it is time to change into a different time zone? Sorry if this seems a really obvious question, but it's been bugging us!

It's done on a day by day basis and you will get a note on your bed each night that it needs to be changed.

From Cunard:-
During World Cruises and Transatlantic crossings, clocks are adjusted overnight where necessary, so that when arriving into a new country with a different timezone to the last clocks will have been adjusted accordingly (ahead or behind of UK time). An example of this would be when travelling into New York clocks will be adjusted by 5 hours behind the UK, or vice versa during the sea days to New York. You will be notified of the time changes in the The Daily Programme the on board news paper.

We prefer going west when doing a transatlantic as you gain the hours rather than lose them.

This needs to happen for the day light as well as the gradual change.
It will get light and dark at roughly the same time each day. |

The thing you need to remember as well is that it's not a 'real' time. It's ships time.
When we go back an hour on the ship in the middle of the Transatlantic, it may be that we haven't really crossed a time zone, but as it's a sea day, they will schedule one in to make it easy for everyone. They try not to do time changes on port days. You need to be careful if calling or texting home as you can inadvertently wake people up!

It's done daily as previous posters have said. We've been on a couple of P&O cruises when they altered the clocks at lunchtime. Much prefer it during the night.
