My daughter travelled alone to join us when she first started work. When she arrived at Sanford she was taken into ‘the room’ with other young single travellers while we waited outside not knowing where she was hunting she sneaked a text using her phone in her pocket. She was asked why she had travelled from a different airport than normal; why she hadn’t travelled with us the day before - they had our flight details; where she worked and how could she afford to fly to Florida when her parents weren’t paying. She answered calmly and was allowed to escape after about an hour when a senior officer asked the one interviewing her why she was there. An older teen was kept a little longer, we waited with his mother who was very upset.

Just double check this is correct. Our kids are included on our insurance but only if they travel the same dates we travel.

For those who are concerned about their own policy, we have cover through our bank and it’s pretty generous with the extent of cover -

‘The insurance covers all Nationwide FlexPlus current account holders, their partners and dependent children, and allows them to travel independently of each other throughout the year.’

Providing he just tells the TSA the truth, I.e meeting with family, travelling home 6 days later etc, and he is insured and has ESTA, he’ll be completly fine. He isn’t a minor.

Agreed re Nationwide travel insurance. Imo, it’s one of the best and most flexible covers out there.

I see both sides, whilst I was older when I travelled alone and even when doing several short trips within months of each other was never pulled for extra questioning, I have friends who were .
My cousins on the other hand were younger and often were pulled for questioning (and rightly so , I think they all did a bit of cash in hand working at a family friend's restaurant ). There are certain flags they look for. Just left college or school, travelling at the very beginning of our school /college holidays. Luggage inappropriate to the declared length of stay(too much or too little) , most profiling is done before you land.
If a young adult is travelling alone it's very likely they will be questioned more closely. So long as they are prepared for it it shouldn't be a problem. Watching some of the flyon the wall programmes about overseas airports (think it's called Nothing to declare) will give them a good idea of what NOT to do !

Sad she was upset. But I can understand why the TSA may deem young adults travelling on their own as a higher risk of overstay. It’s their jobs to protect the USA first and foremost. But I do have sympathy as I know first hand that they are not the most hospitable.

Probably best to warn young adults that this may happen. Remember that if they are clear and tell the truth they’ll be fine. Nobody is doing anything wrong.

I'm 54 and doing a solo trip in September. I'll prepare myself for this to happen to me.

This is all really helpful advice, thank you ! He’s sensible, and he’s been with us before so he knows to take it seriously. I will prepare him for extra questioning & tell him not to panic. Good point about the luggage as I was going to take some of his clothes & toiletries so he could go hand luggage only - perhaps I’ll reconsider !
