Flying from Miami-Tolls

We are flying to & from Miami. What is the best thing to do, in regards to road tolls. Last time we flew there we thought we’d be able to ‘pay as you go’ like you do in Orlando. Unfortunately we came across a lot of Tolls that were all automated. I remember having a bit of a bill when we handed the car back. What is the cheapest way around this? Is there a package you can purchase? Our car rental is through Alamo.

Thanks in advance

Jo

No package, your vehicle will be identified by it's number plate and the charge plus a daily admin fee will be charged to your credit card about a month after you return.

We flew into Miami and then drove up after a couple of day, we’re doing the return trip in a couple of days 😭. We came across quite a few tolls and decided just to drive through and activate the sunpass so we didn’t have the hassle of finding change on arrival

We just activate the sunpass when first use the car, we drove to/from Miami in 2016 and went through a few tolls around the Orlando area and our bill after 17 days with Avis was £42. Didn’t think that was too bad and it was much easier than trying to find change all the time. Will be doing the same from Thursday onwards.

Agree with this over the course of a holiday a few £s nothing in comparison to the cost of your holiday and no worries for change or thinking you have gone through a toll and not paid.

We are flying into and from Miami in October and driving straight up to Orlando, is there a way to avoid toll roads or is it inevitable we will come across some? We have our car with Avis can we still get the sun pass if needed? Thanks

The majority of the automated cashless tolls, which operate via the registration plate, are in the Miami area.
As said, easiest to just get the bill from your rental company; they'll automatically charge your credit card for the funds.

We flew home from Miami in June. We drove from Orlando on the Turnpike and just paid as we come to the toll booths. The first booth issued us with a card - we asked about this at the next rest/services. Just had to keep driving until we got to our exit to the airport and think it was around $17. Approach to MIA was certainly different to the approach to MCO 😉

With Avis, Sunpass will already be in the car and you use the switch to turn it ON or OFF; if ON, it will be activated if you drive through the Sunpass lanes; if you drive through the PAYG lanes, it won't be activated.
$3.95 charge per day with a maximum charge of $19.75 per month.

Otherwise, if you really want to avoid tolls, set your sat nav to 'avoid toll roads' but this may increase your travel time substantially!

Depends whereabouts in Orlando you want to be.

The US27 can be picked up a few hundred yards from the MIA car garage. US27 all the way to I-4 or US192 toll free. Dual carriageway or better all the way.

Just to add that all Sunpass schemes in Florida are "toll by plate". Basically driving through a Sunpass lane will enable it by photographing your plate. All explained here.
