We went to Clearwater a few years ago, we spent 2 weeks around the theme parks then our last week at the coast.
We have been to US 20 times, totalling about 50 weeks. The week in Clearwater was our only mistake we ever made, did not like it from start to finish, bad hotel(Hilton), bad food, bad weather. Other people love the Gulf coast and Clearwater but it was not our sort of place, just spent the week wishing we were back in Orlando, now with my experience I would have a car a go back but back then we used the Virgin transfer.

It was Oct 1999, when we booked it it was a Double tree but just before we got there Hilton rebranded and started doing work on it, I guess they were nowhere near finishing the transformation. We went into eat there, think it was Fri night Surf and Turf buffet, we got seated had a drink walked upto the buffet and looked at each other, we could not believe they called it a buffet, I cook a bigger piece of beef on a Sunday at home. there were a few shrimp 2 soups a bit of salad and a little veg. For about $30 each. I told the manager it was a disgrace, paid for 3 cokes and walked out. After the fantastic meals we had had in Orlando we could not believe it. The main places to eat nearby were all fish restaraunts, DW wont eat fish.
We did not get on with the staff, don't know what it was it was just not a friendly place. We saw the Virgin rep all she could do was try sell timeshare, trying to get us look around places. The only things we enjoyed was the pier and sunsets. Now with all the experience we have we would probably enjoy it more, get a car, do more research, back then it was only our 2nd vist to US and still learning.

We stayed at the hilton a few years ago and thought it was good ,we were there for a week thats to long not a lot to do a couple of days is okay a nice randr break from the parks, the beaches are spectacular,we went on a dolphin watch boat tour and it was one of the highlights of our holiday,it is so emotional seeing these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.

I think thats it about places like Clearwater they are ok if you like a break, thats not our sort of thing, even in August when we go for 24 or 25 nights we do a theme park evey day, not full days but still prefer to be in a park than sitting about. Only time we enjoy relax days are if we are on a cruise.

We go to Clearwater every year and love it cause we like the relaxed chilled out week after orlando, but like some people have said theres not that much to do and alot of people prefer St Petes.
We stay at the Sharaton Sand Key, also last time we were there (June 06) there were lots of building works going on and the main beach road was closed. |
