$500 travellers cheque!

I have just picked up my travellers cheques from the Post Office and one of them is for $500!

Will i be ok to use this as cash?
Where's the best place to change it?

Thanks.

Personally i would take it back and see if they will exchange it for smaller dominations.

I havent used TC's lately but when i did i never had anything larger than $100 ones and some places werent overly keen on these.

I cant see places like Walmart wanting to take it.

So would I. Some places freak at $100 T/Cs never mind $500. If they won't help I'd be tempted to get it cashed ASAP at your hotel or a bank but it's a lot of cash to be carrying around.

I would take them back but ordered them online and just picked them up at the local PO so won't be able to.

Maybe you could have a word in your local PO, someone might be able to help.

I really think you are going to struggle to use them in the shops, hopefully your hotel will be able to change it for you.

I guess your best bet it to use it to buy a big purchase rather than say one for $150 and want $350's back in change.

Hope it works out ok for you x

If you are staying at Disney then I would have them credit it to your account so you can spend it onsite for meals, drinks etc. (or they may well cash it for you)

but smaller businesses will be unlikely to touch it

The simple solution is just to buy something really expensive when you are there!

I'm surprised the post office gave you such a big amount in one cheque. I've got $100 TC's and last time we went in 2006 they were fine to use, just showed my passport when needed and that was fine, but $500 not too sure I would want such a big one to be honest.

Lots of places don't like anything over $20 let alone $500. Who thought a $500 TC was a good idea should have a good talking to!

I would still call them. i think they've got a bit a cheek sending that out, it is probably quite a percentage of your holiday money all in one cheque.
