Quick alamo sunpass question
We're here now and have an alamo hire car. We've been going straight thru the sunpass lanes - is this correct? Thank you.

Yes, at the end of the holiday you will be billed at $3.95/day up to a maximum of $19.95 plus the cost of tolls. The fees will not show on your CC untill some weeks later.

We're trying the Visitor Toll Pass this year. Sounds like a good scheme and we're looking forward to see how well it works.

We used it a few month ago, coming up from Fort Lauderdale and it worked really well. As said above, it maybe a good few weeks before it goes on your credit card, but for convenience it’s brilliant. Especially with Alamo you don’t need to tell them you are going to use it, just use it when you need too

How does Alamo know not to charge you on their system if you've got a visitor pass & done skip the line ?

I'm guessing that the VTP card sends some sort of electronic message to the overhead scanning equipment which tell the camera/Sunpass system to ignore you. It won't matter if you've done skip the counter or not as that just avoids queuing at the terminal desk.
There's been dozens of Dibbers who have successfully used the new VTP and, as far as I've seen, nobody has come on to say that their credit card was charged for both the VTP and the Sunpass. Mick EDITED to say that chmurf's following explanation is far more credible than my pathetic technical guess.

to try and make it simple
your car will be picked up by the local toll authority, like any other car they'll have a list of all the cars that went through the toll that list will be processed by their computers, that will match that list against toll service providers if they find your license plate in the visitor tollpass list, then it will "bill" the visitor tollpass scheme, just like they would for sunpass transponder users, and other providers if they don't find you on any sunpass program list, they will eventually find you on alamo's list, and then bill alamo which in turn will submit an invoice, and hit your credit card so to answer your question, if you're enrolled on the visitor tollpass scheme, alamo will never know you used that toll, because the toll authority will not bill them, so they won't bill you in return Edited at 04:07 PM. |

That's a far more sensible explanation than my so-called technical guess. Very easy as you say for a computer to spot that a plate ABC 123 has been recorded by VTP and can then cancel the Sunpass record.
Now I think about it regular Dibber and Florida resident DonnaD has said earlier that you might still see a camera flash even with VTP Mick
