I am very proud of my old fogey licence. Don’t see why I should have to pay for a new licence and also have to renew it every 10 years. This one is good until I am70 !
Same category had my paper licence over 40 years and no intention of changing until 70 when it is free and forced on me. DH has just had to apply for a photo licence as he hits the big 70 still at least it has not cost him anything. Some years back some friends of ours changed their licence's over not realising it costs them every 10 years to renew it

Strange how no one complains about getting an ESTA for $14 every 2 years but do about a UK driving licence which costs £14 for a decade

It is £20 to replace a paper driving licence and until it is compulsory I will keep my paper version. I guess as the esta is compulsory there is nothing we can do about it so not worth complaining whereas I do not have to replace my driving license.

I was one of those who wouldn't get rid of my paper licence until one day I thought why am I having to carry this darn Passport around with me.

Switched within a week of being home.

THIS!

I may only be 36 and therefore only ever had a plastic licence but it lives in my purse and is handy for ID purposes. I remember back in the day, my dad having to carry the passports with him and them all getting wet on a water ride. So for £20 for new or £14 for renewal, I would recommend switching (they’ll even use your passport photo!)

When in the US I have never had to produce my passport alongside it either (but following advice on here, I now have photos of our PPs on my phone.)

Really Don’t think anyone is complaining at all . The op asked if it was still valid and the answer to their question is yes .

An esta is compulsory but changing your DL is personally choice . Why does it matter to those who have changed that others still are comfortable carry their passports ? It’s like the cash or credit card question l no one is right or wrong . It Wouldn’t suit us if we all thought and did the same things.

I didn't actually say people on this thread were..but I know generally people do. Actually for some time people have been issued plastic from day one, probably anyone who has passed their test in the last 20 years, and therefore updating it every 10 years is as compulsory as an ESTA, eventually the paper only people will die out so the update and cost becomes compulsory for all.

Personally I couldn't give a damn what people do or do not carry but was merely making a point

Does it, thought it was free or was that only for a short period of time when they first did the change over.

Possibly. I enquired because I thought it was free. I do like my paper license though. I don’t drive abroad so it isn’t really a problem.

I found mine was starting to rip along the fold edges so changed. Find the new one great for ID over here too
