Carpet Buying Help

Neither husband or I have ever bought a carpet - he grew up in council houses, I grew up in army quarters, then we started married life in quarters. Now we have moved into a house that needs new carpets in all bedrooms, upstairs hall and stairs. I have no idea where to start or what sort of carpet to get. There are just the two of us at home now but we have a rather messy sprocker spaniel. Do we go for looped, wool, twist or stain free?

Never given carpet a big thought, although, the quality of underlay makes a big difference. I’m sure others will correct me though.

You are so right don’t skimp on underlay and as you have a dog don’t go too light it will get spoilt really quickly.

Buy the best you can afford. 80% wool 20% nylon is good.
However underlay is the big thing to consider. Aim at circa £10 per sq metre for that.

Don’t get too attached to it when it’s first laid... it won’t stay that nice for long!

Get the best underlay you can afford then decide on a carpet.

Loop will catch with pet claws- avoid .
We use a local independent supplier who gives great advise re what, where. We have the same carpet colour/style in bedrooms & on stars but they are different grades to cope with usage. Well worth finding your local supplier.

Thank you everyone. Oddly enough none of our current carpets appear to have any underlay, never seen that in a house before. Our bedroom carpet feels paper think without, so will indefinably make sure we get a good quality underlay

Is it a new build? My Son had the free carpets with Persimmon and it's like walking on hardboard! I'm sure there is no underlay.

I've bought my new carpet from tapi. It's in the bedroom, a light colour so cats are banned.
Made sure I had a level floor, good underlay as this makes the difference, its nice and thick and so soft on my feet

My carpet in the lounge and the downstairs bedroom are terrible, they feel thin and the underlay must be so so thin
