Paying OOP - when do I draw the line?
Hello everyone!
I’m going to Florida in August with my OH (10 days) and we’re staying offsite. I’ve been to Florida before but have never eaten in any of the parks apart from Rainforest Cafe at Disney springs so I’m really eager to book some ADRs! However I’m also looking forward to eating in some of the offsite restaurants like Chillis, Miller’s Ale House etc. My question is, as Disney meals are so much more expensive, how many would you book if staying off site and paying OOP? Would welcome anyone’s experience of this, including places that are worth the money (on or off) and places that are not! Apologies for the wordy post. Edited at 07:01 PM. |

We normally only eat offsite and very rarely eat TS at Disney, however this year we are travelling with friends who like to eat onsite so we are compromising. We have 5 TS places booked out of 10 nights that we are there. We generally find the variety and quality of food and prices are much better offsite, there aren't many places that I would choose to eat at onsite. However, the places we have eaten at and don't mind paying for are:
The Boathouse, Disney Springs Yak & Yeti, Animal Kingdom Beaches & Cream, Beach Club Via Napoli, Epcot The Plaza, Magic Kingdom We are trying Sanaa for the first time in August and also having dinner at 'Ohana (not a particular favourite but my daughter's choice). I would go for a 50/50 balance of on and off site. If you find the first couple of Disney ADRs are leaving you feeling like you are overpaying, you could always cancel the rest (assuming you give at least 24 hours notice)

I have contemplated eating at some onsite restaurants this time but after looking at various menus and prices I think we will continue to eat offsite which is of no help to you I know !

We will tend to eat on-site when staying in the parks late, we both like a "proper" sit down meal once a day. You obviously can't get away from the prices though, we reckoned a onsite meal was approx. $30-$40 more expensive than off-site options.( for 2) The likes of Yak & Yeti & Skippers are decent value, we really enjoyed the pizza at Via Napoli until we realised it cost the best part of £30!
I think a lot depends on where you are staying, our HR SSR is only 15 mins walk from the Crossroads area, so plenty of off-site options. SD

We’ve had the dining plan quite a few times and have tried a lot of the popular TS places. There isn’t one with the possible exception of Teppan edo which I think is worth the cost. I would enjoy a meal at The Cheesecake Factory or Millers just as much but for a fraction of the cost.

One of our ADRs is for Yak and Yeti so thanks for that one. I know Disney food is expensive but I realise I’m paying for the theming and experience at some places too so don’t mind that!

We’ve always stayed offsite with no ddp but eaten at many restaurants in the parks. We’ve done the Crystal Palace, chef mickeys , castle , liberty tree, mamma Melrose , bog lunch and dinner , gf cafe , Tusker house , garden grill, scI fi , blaze .
The character meals you obviously pay for the characters . Mama Melrose was good and not too bad value, same for liberty tree. ScI fi is just so different and the kids loved sitting in a car so that’s why we did that . Blaze is excellent value though. The more we go the less we book as we’ve done the ones we’ve wanted to do , there’s a few left so maybe next trip for us. I think you need to work do you want to eat somewhere because it’s different to home /anywhere else and out the cost off the menus. It’s always going to be more expensive and the food not top standard but you are making memories. I’d always wanted to eat in the castle and it cost over $300 for us but worth every penny to me . So it’s not always about cost x

We currently have yak and yeti, BOG lunch, Sci-fi dinner and garden grill breakfast most of which are on your list which is good news. We will try to visit Blaze depending on queues!

We have 2 Disney restaurants booked, we stay offsite but this year staying at Disney for our last 3 nights, no parks though it's just to do Disney springs, Boardwalk & some resort visits, the Disney restaurants we've eaten at previously have been a let down especially for the cost but I really wanted to try the boathouse at Disney springs & Sanaa, I like the look of the bread service there plus it's not overly expensive either but 2 restaurants is probably my limit, personally I think there is much better food offsite for a fraction of the cost

You can use a Landry card st Yak and Yeti, you pay $25 which is credited to the card and if you travel on the month of your birthday you get an extra $25 on the card. On our first trip we didn’t really know anything about the restaurants and ADRs and paid oop for Jungle Navigation co. Really loved the food there.
