Mobile Travel Money Card Experiences?

I was just wondering what everyone’s experiences are with using a pre paid travel money card? This year I’m planning on upgrading my Disney ticket to AP and with the type of universal ticket I have I need to pay for it when I get there then upgrade that too so I have a lot to pay and didn’t want to take all of it in cash.

What’s your experiences with the travel money cards? Do they have hidden charges? Is it worth the exchange rate or should I just use my normal bank card? Which ones to get and which ones to avoid? Can I use them for authorisation on a car hire? To pay for an Uber?

Sorry I know it’s a lot of questions just trying to think of all scenarios!

I have always been a cash and traveller cheque person, didn't even do contactless/card payments in UK, but got persuaded to get a Revolut card and I love it. No charges, best interest rates by far. I topped the card up as and when I had money then exchanged when the rate was good. In USA it was so easy to use, you get an instant notification on your phone for spends, plus a daily update - so keeping track of your money is easy. Brilliant security features mean you can lock the card.
I use it as my main payment card for smaller purchases at home, have topped it up walking down the street. I have encouraged all my family and friends to get one too. Oh and its easy to transfer money from one card holder to another - so DH and I got a card each for additional security

Please don’t get draw in to one of those rubbish travel cards they offer at the post office and travel agents etc. Revolut, Monzo etc are all much better.

I’ve never heard of Revolut but I’ll be looking into it now. I must be missing something because I thought I found some travel cards that looked ok. Fairfx didn’t seem to have any hidden charges?

With all the problems many people have with Revolut I wouldn't call it better than the others.

We used Revolut & a back up CC and the only cash we used in 3 weeks was the $20 we took for bell services.

Have used Post Office travel card, Fairfx and Monzo card while travelling this month.
All good, no issues and used a UK credit card (with low credit limit) for my hire car authorisation and toll-by-plate fees

i have used fairfx in the past, you lock the rate when you top up
However if you take cash out of the atm there is a charge from fairfx as well as from the atm
Did not have any problem with the Fairfx
Used it as deposit when checking in at cabana bay
And On various shop purchases
Next year i am taking a starling card - transfer pounds to the card
Get the day rate for mastercard at the time of use
No charge foe taking out of the atm (just the atm charge)
Can also use anywhere i have been using it in the UK to help budget
