House clearance
Hi
Do any of you have any experience of house clearances? My dad passed away a year ago and we have now sold his house and not sure what to do with all the furniture. How much do they charge? What should we expect? I am dreading this final step as it feels like loosing another part of my darling dad but know it has to be done. Any advice gratefully received, the house is in Doncaster if that makes a difference. Thanks x

I used Golding Young in Lincolnshire - some went to auction (some specialist auctions too ) other stuff in a skip but the profit from the auction paid for the clearance etc . All one company including skip hire etc made it less stressful for me but its not an easy ride as emotions and memories are linked to the weirdest of items . The estate agent and solicitor, both local, suggested Colin Young to me so maybe ask yours or ideas who to use ?
Good luck and well done for getting this far |

Could you see if the buyer would like to keep the furniture? Xx

We were originally going to use British Heart Foundation after Mother died on 1 March. There was little of value in the house and we had already removed anything we wanted. Mother was a hoarder, so it was a mammoth task, there was a garage and conservatory stuffed with things. However, Covid interfered and BHF couldn’t do it. We eventually got two quotes, one for £1200 and one who quoted £590 per Luton Van. We went with the £1200 and the job took them two days. It wasn’t as simple as just carrying stuff out. Some could be recycled, some sold on, and some just dumped. They did do a great job.

My MIL went into a care home last year. She had already thrown out nearly everything she had owned (she has dementia and would chuck everything out). The furniture left was not worth anything really but we phoned a local charity which has two large warehouses and sells donated furniture to the public with the proceeds going to the homeless. They were happy to come and take it away (free) - maybe there is something like that in your area.

My daughter and her partner bought their first house last year ( the lady who it belonged to had died and family lived miles away), and they put in an offer for house an contents so had table chairs fridge ,freezer, washing machine, 3 piece suite and beds, curtains etc the cooker was left but was condemned by gas engineer.
The vendors were lovely and even left crockery , Pyrex dishes saucepans baking trays etc, everything for them in their first home. There were some irons through the ages and a wooden ironing board |

Thanks for the replies, we are going to ask if the buyer wants anything but tbh most of its older than me and not worth anything so think we will still have a lot to clear. I really just want it dealt with as emotionally it's really tough, I have already kept way too much stuff x

We had the charity Emmaus come to my grandma’s home to take what they wanted. They took all the furniture. We also have all the kitchen items to a lady who had to leave her home in a hurry and had nothing. So, if there’s a local women’s refuge they might be interested. We did a couple of tip runs and a charity shop run. I know it’s difficult and you may want to deal with it differently but we took comfort in her things being re-used for people who need it.
