Best Way to Label Clothes?
It's been a long while since I've needed to label school clothes, but I now find myself needing to label clothes for my Mum who is in a nursing home.
I hate sewing, but are iron on labels any good? All clothes are laundered by the home, so labels must be guaranteed not to come off in the wash. Any advice or recommendation would be gratefully received. Debra

When my Dad was in a care home we bought some stick on ones specially designed to stick to the label in the clothes. They worked OK and it was easy to leave a few spares in his bedside drawer in case.

When my MIL was in the care home we bought the laundry markers and just put her initials on and her room number. We did the labels on the side as well as the top. If we didn't find a label we marked it where it wouldn't show when she wore the item.
That stood the test of time as they washed everything on 60 deg washes.

I started by sewing in labels... that got old really fast.
I then started using a blue permanent pen (blue so that it stands out easier than black), which is great on a light background, but useless on a dark fabric; it does fade over time though. I've just bought 120 stick on labels from Stikins, which have great reviews (hopefully moving my Dad to a nursing near me next week). I plan to stick one to the washing/care label and one to the size label, if possible. Dad's socks will also always be white, so I can use the blue permanent pen to put his initials on the soles.

I bought a labeling machine from Aldi for marking mums clothes. You can buy the iron on fabric and regular labels from eBay/Amazon etc. They did seem to stay on ok. I used to just mark with a sharpie at first but clothes have to washed at such high temperatures the writing soon faded. I labeled up everything even her hairbrush and toiletries ! Stuff still went walkies though.

I used to use stikins for the girls’ uniform, they lasted years.

I wish I lived nearer, I love sewing on labels. Looks like a gap in the market eh?

I've already looked at the Stikins ones which seem to get good reviews, but it's useful to hear directly from people who have used them.
I agree with the poster who mentioned things going walkabout which I find very frustrating. Debra
