I bought some mozzarella last week, picked by myself from a well know supermarket to use later the same day. Opened the wrapper and something made me look at the date, it was five days past use by date. Complaint followed and I now have a £10 voucher in compensation. Second complaint in a few weeks, I opened a bag of new potatoes I had bought a few day prior to a terrible stench and they had turned to liquid. Revolting. Feel sorry for the staff, they are doing their best. Probably short staffed, working hard and to be fair it’s often customers probably chucking bags of fruit or veg around that bruise and damage them. Bit like the loaf squeezers!

I have no witty response MH but in all seriousness, this is so annoying and why we rarely shop online now.
OH sometimes orders from Ocado and they definitely seem the best for the freshest items

He also works for Asda as their 'fresh' items are not fresh at all. He must have skipped a page on the training manual to how to pack - we always get a 4 pack of Orange juice on top of the bread items. I hand it back every time for a refund which they do but they leave the crushed items with us.

This is why I have never had my shopping delivered. Much easier to go to the shops.

I have the bulk of my grocery delivered or do click and collect and have had a few strange substitutions. The Asda delivery man said the handheld device suggests the substitution and the staff can override if it's not suitable.

I've worked out that there are certain brands that won't be substituted, I guess it's an agreement between the brand and the supermarket's head office. For example, 2L bottles of Coca Cola will be unavailable rather than be substituted for Pepsi or own brand.

I have never done online delivery, always shopped myself and never had trouble getting good quality fresh fruit and veg, until now, the quality or date life is dreadful, even the fruit and veg that has a good date life, I opened a pack of tomatoes that had 5 days life left and they were already soft, I'm wondering if this is why those having home deliveries are getting such bad quality, if I can't manage to get decent stuff picking it myself (and i was an expert at that) then the poor pickers who have no time to pick and chose have no chance.
I can only guess that the fruit and veg that is being packaged isn't as fresh as it should be so the date life means nothing. I often pick up the longest date life to find its not as fresh as the shortest, how is that possible ?

Plus a lot of the shopping picked for online orders (if being shopped in a store) is being picked when the days deliveries are either not in yet or are just being restocked very early in the morning so the online shoppers do not get the array of dates that someone that comes in say at 9 a.m. would get. As I said I used to do this job - first time was years ago and I loved it as a job , I left then went back last year as a second income and the difference as to how they treat and expect of you plus the actual quality and availability of stock has changed for the worse. I am glad I got out of it -you would even get moaned at if you didn't substitute an item even if there was no substitute that would be similar (which may explain some of the unusual substitutes though not all ) They would keep a record of how many times you didn't send a sub and would bring it up on your appraisals.

Totally agree,I have been trained on this job recently to help out as they are seriously short staffed. We start at 4am so often the fresh items have not been put on the shelves or you are trying to manoeuvre your way around the nighshift and all of the other shoppers. It is actually hard work and you never stop, trying to pick your items per hour.Last month when we had real supply issues it was a nightmare trying to pick substitutes as all of the recommended items were also unavailable! And you get into trouble if you don’t send a substitute but I bet the majority of them get sent back again away.
