If you take the I4 route you will avoid the tolls personally I'd advoid it
And use the 417 which has tolls Personal choice |

As Helen says. We haven't done SFB since 2008 but I guess around $8 or $9 in tolls on the 417. It has 10% of traffic volumes compared with I-4 and serious roadworks on the Interstate in the downtown area.
I believe you can pay cash at all the tolls but if you use Sunpass it will depend who you've hired with. Mick

Good choice probably the best Sunpass scheme and all costs described here. Only charged an admin fee on the days you use it.
sunpass/en/tolls/rentalVehicles.shtml All hire companies in Florida are Sunpass enabled as they work on "toll by plate". Just drive through - nothing to sign up to and nothing to switch on in the car. Mick

Sorry never use a satnav. Maybe you can set it to avoid "Highway". From memory of over 10 years ago I recall picking up 417 was fairly easy but make sure you pick 417 south

That is just not true!
Alamo is NOT Sunpass enabled - the other rental companies are NOT Sunpass enabled either. If they were, you would be paying your tolls DIRECT to Sunpass not via the rental companies. Sunpass is a PREPAY scheme - with a rental company you are NOT prepaying. Sunpass requires you to have a transponder - with a rental company you do NOT have a transponder. Sunpass requires you to have a Sunpass account - with a rental company you do not have that account. 'Pay-by-plate' is NOT Sunpass. It kicks in when you FAIL to pay by Sunpass (or by cash or E-pass or the Visitor Toll Pass). The page you linked to on the Sunpass web site actually says that. It is good that you link to official information, but it is not helpful if you then contradict it. The SunPass logo on the web site states 'Prepaid Toll Program' - which is very clear. 'Sunpass' is a trademark. The road signs (e.g. on the Selmon Expressway in Tampa) state Sunpass OR pay-by-plate - they are DIFFERENT. The Alamo scheme is 'HTA Tollpass'. Incidentally, much of the SR417 is run by CFX, who have their own rival E-pass and Visitor Toll Pass scheme, rather than Sunpass, so even if you had a Sunpass transponder you would actually be paying your tolls to CFX. I have used the I-4 through the roadworks many times. There are still 3 lanes open, and traffic still moves relatively freely, i.e. everyone doing 60 when the speed limit is 50. I have always found it is slower on the Disney-Universal section. It is a matter of personal preference whether the I-4 or SR417 is 'better'. The difference in times is only a few minutes. It is more a difference in stress levels. |
