Is it just LA that appeals to you? There are far nicer destinations in California, if you don't mind me saying so?

LA itself is monstrously big and the traffic can make it take a lot longer to get from A to B than you might think. As such I'd suggest you may prefer to stay in at least a couple of different hotels to get closer to your intended destinations (though frankly I'd suggest at least one of those hotels is somewhere completely different to LA, such as San Francisco, San Diego, Yosemite or one of the other national parks...)

Having never been there before where would you suggest as a good place for 'first timers'?
