Do you think you need 7 nights in Waikiki as well as 7 nights in Aulani? What about visiting one (or more!) of the other islands as you've gone all that way...

I know this is only my opinion, but Waikiki is very commercialised and not the real Hawaii at all. I think you would be missing out on a lot if you didn't see other parts.

We cycled, although some of the things we done were not planned and can also be done on foot.

The flights were from NY to LA with a connection to Hawaii. These were with AA and whilst there were no problems it was like internal flights in the UK, no IFE or refreshments. iPads / iPods with movies (or similar) are essential so you can relax.

If I went to Oahu and stated at Waikiki I would have been devastated, like mentioned it's a bit like Blackpool, can you rent points to increase your stay at aulani? Much better in my opinion and easy travel.
Thank you both. We've been to Hawaii before (as a couple - not with the children) and have island hopped. I know we're in the minority - but we actually like the Waikiki area and as we want to do all of the shops and several Waikiki restaurants, we thought we'd use that as a base to get most of our sightseeing done (easy for lanikai beach, Hanauma bay and obviously diamond head) and then hopefully we'll make more use of Aulani as a resort rather than just a base

I'm still thinking of New York, but wondering whether we would be better off twinning it with a Florida trip when the boys are a little older and can appreciate all it has to offer

Thanks again for your really helpful replies

Our boys loved the sights. The little one who was 6 at the time is now obsessed with the Statue of Liberty. In fact when we were there we had a diva moment when we wouldn't allow him to spend his holiday money in a 5 foot high model of her...

My grandaughter was 6,when we took her to Hawaii.we did it in one go.from taking off,at manchester to landing in Hawaii,it took 26 hrs.
It didn,t seem too bad though, but would definately prefer,to get there & then just relax.
