Want to surprise OH in Jan 15 - your tips please!

I have done the West Coast previously but a good few years ago - about 10! :O

I would like to surprise my OH with a trip to LV/PS/LA or simply LA over 14 nights in January 2015 as he has been working so hard and really deserves it!
I would like some hints and tips on how to get the best for my money, hotel recommendations etc for Anaheim/Hollywood (would split time) and how to make it a DIY bargain!

I am a little DIY shy but have looked into it as an option to make costs cheaper (and it certainly does!) - this does mean that I don't know a good travel site to use when I see one!

*we are going to orlando sept 15 - taking my nephews - and hopefully purchasing our first home later this year so needs to come in reasonably*

Please post hints for airlines (direct)/ hotels and sites TIA

I think a lot of people have got good prices this year with Norwegian! I am a right stickler for familiarity though so have paid through the nose for Virgin! I just can't bring myself to book with budget airlines for some reason.

Hotel/accommodation wise, for our WC trip in September where we are staying in 7 different places, I have literally used 7 different brokers! Each one, the cheapest I could get for the dates I wanted. These include, HotelClick, Expedia, Go Compare, Travel Republic, Booking.com ect

DIY is definitely the way to go if you're on a budget.

Like Abi we use brokers for hotels and this year we stayed in 3 different ones in Vegas and booked through 3 different people. Its just a matter of searching for the right deals.

I wouldn't have thought Jan would be expensive for hotels unless there happens to be a convention on in Vegas if/ when you go there.

But also the weather might not be that great in January.

I've only ever flown VA to Vegas but i only ever book when they have a sale on, i wouldn't pay there normal prices.

Thanks for the brokers tip - there's a couple of ones I hadn't heard of of ill definitely check them out!

I understand about January but its a time that fits around OH work so it's the best time for us considering the other holiday will be September
