Our lab has been on them for about 3 years now. They've been life changing for her.

Before them, she was on antibiotics and steroids almost continually, with really bad sores all over her tummy and awful ears and non-stop itching.

Apoquel has been a miracle. No itchiness, no tummy sores, no bad ears and most importantly no side effects.

We also get a prescription from the vet and buy them online. We actually only give her half a pill each day instead of a full one, so it costs us about £150 a time, for 100 pills.

As he is only 2 1/2 don’t want him being on quite strong drugs if there is an alternative.
Our boxer gets really itchy with chicken, so we avoid that but also grains as we're not sure which it is that starts her scratching. She's on prednisone at the moment but trying to wean her off that as she's starving all the time

There are tests - I think skin scrapings or blood tests (it was a long time ago we did ours). It costs quite a bit. Initially we had it done to make a serum which she was injected with every month to try and stop the allergic response but it didn't work!

Our vet put Flo on Apoquel when we got her from Many Tears...she was also getting Malaseb baths as her skin was very bad... smelly... itchy and black...it used to look like tiny black.mites..
She was only on it for a few months..prescription also from vets to buy online.
She has been amazing since then..no itchy skin lovely and pink now and no horrendous smell.

We have used it short term. I would highly recommend research into a raw food diet, there are a lot of case studies and information out there on how it can work wonders for skin.

There can be negative comments about salmonella, but such bacteria has been found in many commercial dry and wet dog foods too so it carries no extra risk. As long as you follow basic food hygiene you don't have anything to worry about, so try not to let these points undermine the positive research out there.

One thing worth mentioning about a raw diet, which I've also tried is the grain which may be a cause. Most raw diets will contain animals fed on grain ie chicken. If your dog is allergic to grain it won't be eliminated by feeding raw. Bill loved eating it and I have to say his butt itching was better but he still itched everything else and it didn't solve his ear issues.

My lakeland terrier has just had a short course of prednisone (12 days), his side effect was constant drinking and weeing, he even weed in the house several times as he just couldnt hold it, he was mortified.
