We flew last Christmas lhr to Mia on a 747. We flew Business class so we had fabulous food and space etc. Plane seemed a bit older but was fine and clean and more importantly on time!

Did this route summer 2016 on the 747 with BA. Plane is a little old and maybe a bit tired looking but we were very comfortable in economy. Staff were great, IFE was fine and food was as passable as any plane food ever is. Would happily do again as we only paid £1100 for 3 seats in August so well worth that.

The 747-operated flights on this route are usually BA's unrefurbished 747s, which means older seats and IFE (basically the same as the Gatwick 777 fleet has today). It's always possible that a refurbished 747 would be substituted in for a given flight, though I wouldn't count on it.

The service and food will be the same regardless of which version of 747 is used, the main noticeable differences will be the seat and IFE. The economy cabin is also bigger (more rows of seats) on the unrefurbished 747s.

If you have booked or are booking, you can tell which version is currently assigned to the flight by doing a dummy seat selection. If economy starts at row 28, it's an unrefurbished 747, if at row 39 it will be a refurbished aircraft.

We did this route August 2016. The plane was not a refurbished one, but to be honest that didn't bother us. We had row 33 in the middle and found it fine, leg room seemed slightly more than economy on a European flight (dh is 6'2 and he was comfortable). Seats were comfy, ife was fine on the way out, dh kept getting stuck in the way home, but he slept most of the way anyway. Food on the way out was actually above average for plane food, we all ate the lot, even the kids, on the way home it was awful & no one touched it, thankfully we stopped at Vero beach for lunch on the way back to Miami & filled up there so wasn't hungry. Crew were fine, wouldn't say overly friendly, but did what they had to do. Would say they bought round drinks every hour, and you could help yourself to drinks if you wanted more.

We were more than happy with the service, and are doing th same flights next summer too. For us, It's a big saving by booking a BA fly drive into Miami which is one of the reasons we can afford to go back again so soon! The other benefit is that Heathrow is on our doorstep so makes travel day much less stressful!

Thanks all for taking the time to reply.
Is the IFE the loop type or is it seat back where we can pick our own shows/movies etc?
Thanks

It's seat back where you can pick your own movies. Had quite a good selection last year which kept us all occupied

It's the on-demand type (only goes to loop if something goes wrong with the system on a flight). On the unrefurbished aircraft the screens are a bit small and the picture definition not great, but there is still a fair amount of content.
