been twice, never had a sat nav... we downloaded a map onto our UK Garmin from the Garmin website, £35 and used it for the past 3 years, one of the best money i've ever spent!

Speechless Can't believe that you actually think that's acceptable and that you're recommending it on a public forum. Walmart certainly can't sell your used satnav as new can they? So in effect you're stealing because it's easier. Good grief.

We did the same but ours does not update even though it says lifetime map updates! Do you have any advice?

We rented one from Alamo on our first time and not only did it cost the earth we had to keep returning to the Alamo car care centre at Disney to get a new one as nine of them would hold a charge 😳
We are buying one now and loading it with USA maps. Thought it would be worth the investment as we plan to be regular visitors 😀

If you more than one iphone, using the same apple id, you can have it on multiple phone too.
This includes free updates for life and it can be used with just the internal GPS or with the aid of a "3" all you can eat data card . I tried it with data on and off and did not notice any difference .
Only addition you will need is a cigarette/power adapter for the car . Tha app is power hungry if on battery only .

Accuracy was excellent we were at SSR and the app directed via "the back road" not the sign posted road .

will use it again this year
Fully agree with this. I got it for £32.00 last year and will be using it for the second time in April.

Whatever you choose make sure you take a car charger along for it.
If using an app on your phone you will need a mount as well.
The charger tip comes from bitter experience when we took the sat nav but forgot the charger

Have you connected it to your pc and run the tom tom app?
The updates are on there
You should connect every two weeks ideally for gps fix and any minor map corrections. Then every few months for map update

We have a (relatively) old TomTom, my husband downloaded the North US maps and it works a treat I heard it could be VERY expensive if you rent one with the car tho!

I downloaded the copilot app for my phone, it cost hardly anything and found everywhere we needed to go.
It downloads the maps you require so no data charges :-)
