On a slightly different note make sure your some gets good independent advice (not duty solicitor) if he is offered a caution as this can cause all sorts of problems down the line in the UK.
I agree with others, duty Solicitors are in the best possible place to advise. There can be a kind of snobbery around duty representatives, because they’re available free of charge, but in the IOM all the people on the duty rota do criminal work day in day out, go to Court every week, regularly in the police station, whereas those not on the rota are very much dabblers. I know which I’d rather be getting advice from!

Because I was one for 12 years until I changed to Prosecution
From my experience (and it’s very limited as we did commercial law) the main problem we had with duty solicitors was that they were trying to get everything dealt with as quickly as possible rather than the best way. I am happy to be corrected.

With respect that is referring to them checking their police records not ours. There is literally no way they can check every esta application on our computer systems.

Seriously take a step back people and ask yourself, would the UK government give full unrestricted access to our Police records to the USA? And if so why? Because serious criminal records would already be shared through interpol and other international agreements.

Canada's Eta is a different ballgame. They want to know everything disclosed, but that isn't really relevant anyway.
Unless the OP is going for a super-cheap indirect via Toronto where an ETA would be necessary

Or indeed like my last flight in 2019 where a tech emergency was called and the plane landed in Halifax Nova Scotia and was thee overnight.

Those who had an ETA (or could apply online in terminal) were allowed to leave to go to hotels, those who didn't (or couldn't) had to bed down in the terminal overnight
