Anyone been to Efteling theme park in the Netherlands?

I took my son to DLP just before Christmas in 2018, and didn’t find it particularly magical.

Efteling looks amazing and seems to have more atmosphere, but I’d love to hear some Dibber accounts, if anyone’s been?

With all the messing about with travel recently we had looked into this for October half term. It gets great reviews - it’s up there as one of the best outside the Disney / Universal parks. The lad is a great height for all but one of the attractions and the 1-night / 2-day park ticket would have been perfect for us.

In the end we are in Turkey now so won’t be doing it especially given Holland is on the quarantine list.

Plan was to drive as we live near Hull and get the overnight ferry to Rotterdam where it looks to be about an hour away the other side. We’d pretty much be driving there for opening, have the night in Efteling hotel and then head back for the ferry the following night. In October half term it came out as cheaper than Center Parcs when offered up against what a 3-night long weekend there costs.

Really want to go at some point though!

We went in December 2017 and loved it. I would describe it as wintery rather than overtly Christmassy- there was an ice rink, several bonfires, stalls selling hot chocolate and lots of beautiful lights. Be warned, the weather was dry but well below zero and the park is so large that you will need to do lots of walking, so wrap up warm!

That sounds perfect. I’d prefer autumn for the woodland colours but I love the sound of the ice rink, bonfires and lights.

I haven’t been at Christmas, but we did go in May about 5 years ago. It’s a beautiful park. There are some really great rides there. It’s full of fairytale creatures, but is quite charming I think, and nicely landscaped. Rides suitable for all the family. There were a couple of decent rollercoasters for teens. The whole park was really well maintained, clean, and nicely themed. It was the opposite of Thorpe park and chessington - no garish colours and fake buildings. They have beautiful carved wood buildings in some areas.
We’re looking to go back next year. We didn’t stay onsite, but you can do. Also, the food was nice.
I almost forgot the talking rubbish bins, and the pink and blue doves (yes real ones!).

Good. You’ve all confirmed what I’d hoped, that it’s beautiful, charming and well themed. With good food as a bonus. I like the look of the houses on stilts too, and who doesn’t love a talking bin.

Havn't been for decades, very fond, but vague memories of a visit in the 80's (I was very little) certainly made an impression and did a show and tell at school about it.

Is there still a donkey that shoots plastic coins from its bum and dyed pigeons/doves? I have old Kodak photos of birds with mottled coloured blue, pink of yellow feathers. Also remember massive slides, the water organ and the carousel plus talking bins (Danke Val? ) remember kids tearing up bits of paper to put in as occasionally it would say something different.

Would love to take the kids as I remember it being a magical fairy tale land experienced long before Disneyworld became a reality for me. Maybe next year...

The donkey and the talking bins are still there, I didn’t see any dyed birds though.
