I use my cards both in the UK and USA and the only place that I've been diddled is the UK. Each to their own.

The thread started as a question about zipcodes and UK cards - it got hijacked by those worried about skimming.
Returning to the OP's question, most pumps in the US ask for a zip code for card payments (i.e.the zip code registered to the card) although a few pumps didn't or were satisfied with a random number. UK cards don't have zip codes associated with them, which means you can't use a UK card at the pump, you have to go in the shop and pay there. Since the zipcode requirement prevents you from using the card at the pump, it prevents you from being skimmed at the pump too. On that basis, this worry is rather misplaced - you are paying inside anyway. Therefore, rather than applying to most Dibbers, the skimming threat applies to people like myself who have a US card, and are there for longer and fill up more times. Is this 'increased threat' big enough to cause me to change my behaviour and not pay at the pump - no it isn't. I just wouldn't use a pump that looked as if it had been tampered with. No-one on here has quoted any numerical facts as to how big this 'problem' actually is - how many pump transactions are there in the US every day and how many are fraudulent? How does that compare with other risks, such as being in a road traffic accident? My latest US bank card is chip and pin, and at my local gas station, if I select Debit rather than Credit, it asks for my pin instead of zipcode, but a zipcode if I choose Credit. The skimming threat at pumps would be more relevant to Dibbers if the pumps start accepting UK cards on a chip and pin basis too. One tip for those paying in the shop by cc is to always ask for (and pay for) a specific amount you know you can fit in (e.g. $20, or $30 if nearly empty). If you say you want to 'fill it up', they will place a hold on your card, possibly for an absurdly large amount (as they don't know how big your tank is), which is then replaced by the actual amount. There might be a delay in releasing the hold, that coud affect you for other things, particularly if it is a pre-paid card. |

Re what, when, where and how, with cc usage, whatever rocks yer boat, altho be cc care responsible by sensible use, not letting the card out of sight with wait staff for example.
