Don't have an iPhone but Android, but have used 'Here' app for past few years -in Europe and US. As pp said, just make sure you download the area map you need before you travel.
I have my phone switched onto 'flight mode' so I can access WiFi, but not use any data. Di x

I used to use Co-pilot, but last trip, as i had data on my iPad, we used google maps. Both very good.

Another vote for the free Navmii app and we'll be using it again in 2 weeks time. Its great because you can save all your favourites before you go. It does have some adverts but they don't get in the way.

Plus with Navmii you can set the app to avoid Toll Roads.

I have a contract iphone but without roaming so I just bought a £20 pay as you go sim and used that whilst away. Ran Waze as a satnav and covered over 2000 miles in two weeks . Had 8gig on the sim and didnt use it all. No danger of running up a big data bill that way.

Thanks all. Got hubby to download Navmii to his phone and passed on all your advice. He's driving (for the first time) when we arrive & his phone is most likely to still have charge ... so his repsonsibility now
