Unless you want to pay extra I'm afraid it's a case of booking your seats when doing on line check in, ie 24 hrs before the flight. I believe if you're an Executive Club member on one of the higher levels of membership you can book them earlier. Also not sure if you're travelling with children you may be able to book seats a little earlier. I thought this has been pretty much the norm with most mainstream airlines for some time but I've only flown BA for the past few years.

I’m monitoring our BA flight to see if I can get away with selecting seats for free 24 hours in advance. If the seats start selling out I’ll pay but trying to avoid doing so.

If your partner has a disability you should be able to book for free in advance - phone their support helpline and they should help

It cost me an extra £600 for 4 seats return. Glad I could pay for half with avios points.
