We tried Longhorns last year; good starter (prawns) but found the steak really peppery, to the point where I had to scrape off the top layer of the steak to be able to eat it. I’m not sure we will be going back.

Sadly that's why we always ask for our steaks unseasoned - not just at Longhorn but any of them. We know there's a tendency to do it in our experience and that's why we choose to ask.
Just like we always have our sodas "without ice". They're cold enough out of the fountain anyway without being diluted another 75% Mick

Mick have you tried Ovation Bar and Bistro near Posner Park? I don't think it's been open that long.

I’m intrigued by this - do you ask for everything unseasoned at the Texas Roadhouse as well? (Sounds daft but I’ve never thought to do this & we have Texas Roadhouse a try due to the rave reviews on the Dibb, but I found everything we tried incredibly salty - compared to both The outback and Longhorns which we all love. But wondering if we could give Texas another try - will they not season the fries etc too if we ask?) 👍

Hi Paul
Yes we "discovered" Ovation about three years ago thanks to Helen (Gryff). We go once or twice every holiday as it's not far from Highgate and even closer for you. It's a small chain (about 3 or 4 only) and offers a bit more choice than the likes of Longhorn, Texas etc. Can recommend the tilapia Imperial if you like fish. Mick

Yes indeed - despite being 74 years old and having visited Florida 36 times I'm still strangely capable of knowing how I like my steaks cooked.
You can basically ask for food any way you like in the places we eat - mid range I suppose. Everywhere will prepare and serve your food as you wish. Fries, steaks whatever. Extra dressing on the Caesar salad. Portions to share. No ice in sodas. etc. etc. Restaurants are there to serve their clients not the other way round - unless you're eating in Disney of course. Only Outback seemed unable to understand "unseasoned" Mick

Thanks Mick - I’m not sure why I’ve never thought to ask before! I guess in this day and age, I always assume people are more aware of too much salt & have cut back - certainly over here I never really have that problem, but weirdly my experience in the US of late is that they seem to be adding more salt to things rather than cutting back!
Will definitely ask for unseasoned everywhere I go next time & will give Texas another shot! 👍 |

I don't know but maybe Helen can help if she spots the post. Not easy to see driving south as it's at the end of a strip mall over on the left hand side. It's not a stand alone place like Longhorn. Here's the menu ovationbistro/menu/ According to their website they have one at Winter Haven which may be closer. Also another Helen recommendation is Harry's Old Place at Winter Haven. Mick
