Virgin Holidays

We have only ever flown to Florida with BA on a fly drive. Never booked with a tour operator before, but was playing round with dates on Virgin Holidays for a fly drive into Miami and baring in mind the price was good for those dates and below our budget.

What do people do with the insurance with Virgin? Do you pay to upgrade to the gold? BA it's included in the price, so i'm not sure! Or can you just have the cheapest car included, then not pick it up and book separately?

Also, booking with VH so far in advance... is this a risk worth taking? It would be deposit only of course.

I'm just playing about with dates and ideas!

I usually go for the fully inclusive option and pay for a tank of fuel at the barrier as there is only me driving.

I don't need any of the following which is the difference between fully inclsive and gold...

> Up to 3 Additional Drivers
> One Tank of fuel
> Unlimited Child Seats
> Underage Driver Fees
> One GPS Rental

so it's not really worth the extra cash to go gold.

Definitely DON'T go for the basic insurance that is included, as from what I remember from various forums, it's not worth the paper it's printed on and doesn't include the following which you really need in the US...

> Extended Third Party Liability up to $1million
> Collision Damage Waiver - Zero excess in event of damage/accident
> Pre payable State/Local Taxes and Surcharges
> One Additional Driver

You can book a package with BA as well - just go onto the BA Holidays page and build your package there.

We always book BA fly drives so a package, but they haven’t released our dates yet, hence why I was looking at Virgin.

Thanks, that’s really helpful. We’re going with friends and they will have their own car and we don’t need car seats etc. As long as fully inclusive covers all the taxes and essentials, which it does, then that’s good to know!

We had a car with VH in 2019. All the research I did said the Gold was pretty important and the basic it came with pretty pointless. Also I wanted satnav and needed car seats and Gold came with that

The last three times we have booked a Fly Drive, I have only paid for basic insurance and then bought a stand alone policy from BetterSafe Care Hire Insurance. Its under £100 for an annual policy and includes the CDW and SLI cover as well as excess cover.
