We kept grandparents scattering as a small immediate family thing and went to their favourite restaurant afterwards.
FIL was quite a big gathering with a long night in the pub afterwards which we sort of excused ourselves from after a little while.

As others have said, do what is right for you and your family. We’ve generally not attended the scattering and left it to the crematorium.

My Dad died last Easter and his ashes sat in the spare room as my mam didn’t know what to do with them, until she had the idea to return him to his hometown.
He was from a small town 20 miles from where we live so when his sister visited from Australia in the summer we went with her, his brother, my mam and my kids. We scattered his ashes in the river where they played as children then walked around the town seeing their old house, first school, lit a candle in the abbey then went for a pub lunch. Once the ashes part was over it was actually a lovely day filled with memories from his closest family and I’m pleased we did it as I don’t look back on it as a sad day.
