Mobile Cottage companies in Cornwall

Considering Cornwall for summer. Had a shock when I looked on Airbnb and everything that looked half decent was £2000 a week ! Is that genuinely the going rate for 3 bedroomed accommodation ?

Does anyone have experience of any other companies who hopefully have provided good customer service during the pandemic. Would prefer a good cancellation policy.

Thanks all.

My friend advertises her house through Orange Roofs which is a Cornwall Specialist agent.

Yes. It can be. It depends what you seek, the dates and the location, just like anywhere else.

Where in Cornwall are you looking to stay and roughly what are you looking for .. and for how many? I only have knowledge in one area, albeit very good knowledge, having lived there most of my life. Polzeath, surfing shoulder to shoulder with David Cameron and Gordon Ramsay can cost thousands more per week and in St Blazey gate, you could almost buy a house for that.

It is no secret that many have looked at a U.K. holiday as taking the ‘safe’ option for 2021 as it will not be dependent on entry to a foreign country or worse, suddenly have the rules for return changed mid vacation.
Cornish Cottage owners (and others in other U.K. tourist areas) have had a very lean 2020. In fact, they have taken a financial hammering. Owners are aware that there will be a considerable demand and are pricing their assets accordingly. It is a supply and demand thing.

If I was looking, and clearly I am well sorted year round, then I would look first at Holidaylettings.co.U.K. As they have worked well for me in Florida. A quick check for Mid August 10 days shows just under 500 properties. Many of those will be on other sites.

P.S Falmouth takes some beating as an all rounder.

I was about to start a similar thread, we usually spend a few days at Sil’s static just outside padstow along with other family, usually 6 of us, I’ve started to think that this year this trip could be our main holiday, so I’ve started looking at cottages/holiday let’s, so we’d have more space and privacy, but we’d want to be close to her place, so I’ll follow this thread keenly x

Thank you. I understand owners will need to recoup some of their losses, it does make a British holiday a lot less attractive though.
We will need 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, parking and easy access to a town. We are 3 adults and a 15 year old, would prefer not to be in a holiday park. Would love a hot tub but not essential. I rather naively thought £1000 a week !

Am I right that the only place really to avoid is Newquay ?

I will avoid Polzeath too. Couldn’t think of anything worse than bumping in to Gordon Ramsay !

Polzeath is very, very expensive.. and in some ways quite isolated from some of the main attractions of Cornwall.

A decent all rounder is Falmouth/Penryn. It has a local train to Truro. It has a large University population that disappears for the Summer months, freeing up some accommodation as the graduates complete in June and those entering accommodation for their second years are keen to only rent from September if they can avoid paying for July and August. Quite a lot of Student let, multi occupancy property thus goes to air BNB and this in turn competes with your traditional, Holiday let’s, creating a little competition.

Falmouth Penryn itself is a pretty town on a beautiful large Harbour, one of the biggest in the World. It ain’t St Ives or Fowey, but the prices reflect that. For a Summer vacation, it takes some beating, having a combination of decent beaches on the doorstep and a few fantastic ones writhing 10 miles
On doorstep, Swanpool, Gyllingvase, Maenporth, Castle, Sunny.
Within 12, Gwithian and Hayle Towans, Pothtowan.

It has more, good restaurants than pretty much anywhere in Cornwall and plenty of great pubs.

It has water ferries to Truro, the Helford and St Mawes.

It has Pendennis Castle, National maritime museum small ships collection. It sells lots of pasties.

Within 30 miles..
Bodmin Jail (have a Google).
Bodmin Steam Railway
Bodmin light infantry museum (very good).
Eden Project
Newquay aviation museum at St Mawgan.
Jamaica Inn
St Michaels Mount
Kynance Cove
Charlestown
Kennal vale gunpowder factories
The great flat lode walk
The Bissoe valley cycle trail.

Further afield
Porthcurno beach
Minack Theatre (book early!)
Botallack mine
Wheal Geevor mine (fantastic)
Levant mine.

In short, you can get a great fortnight without in any way getting bored.

Back to accommodation. Only you know what you seek. It is worth remembering that a two bathroom home is a relatively new thing and that most ‘Cornish cottages’ didn’t even have an inside one originally. There is always a trade off between a quaint picture postcard cottage by the sea and a newer property which may not have such a ‘holiday’ location. Only you can decide what you want, where you want it and what constitutes a good standard. It is subjective.

To get ideas, you want a large range and Holidaylettings.com has more than most as I previously mentioned, in order to get a ballpark figure. You can then always check other sites when you have learned the market.

Top tips if looking at Falmouth..
1. Oyster festival dates will be packed and command a premium.
2. If you find somewhere you like, then contact me and I can summarise the area... but not the individual property.
3. Penryn is joined to Falmouth, but considerably better value. Penryn town centre to Falmouth town centre is around 2.5 miles. The Beaches are not much further. Have a look at a map.
4. The ‘Anchor site’ may work. Best described as Penryn Basin with houses around a mini harbour.
5. There are 3 bedroom modern houses in a Falmouth holiday site called Pendra loweth. Whilst many are privately owned. Some are owned by the site itself. A direct approach to their own office may pay dividends. This site is a short drive to anywhere, but has some on site facilities.. and only one bathroom per house.

Are there dog friendly beaches around Falmouth during the summer months?
