Montreal to New York - opinions and options?

We're thinking of doing a bit of a road-trip before flying down to WDW next year, starting in Toronto, driving to see Niagra and then heading a bit further north to Montreal. Then going down for a few days in New York before flying to Orlando/WDW.

It's the Montreal to New York bit that has me stumped at the moment. I was thinking of getting a one-way car hire, but that looks very expensive as it would be cross-border. Another thought was the slow but scenic Amtrak train ride. Flying would be an option, but we'd like to see a bit of the stuff in between and speed is not really an issue.

Any thoughts?

Andre

Neilhd did Montreal to NYC and then to Toronto this summer - his trip report is in General Trips. I have visited Montreal several times and it is a great city - I like it more each time!

I think it is the cross border that is costing a fortune on the one way drops - not all hire companies even allow you to cross the border (Discount don't for example).

As Mel says we did a similar trip this year (although we went to Long Island rather than into NYC itself this time).

One option could be start in Toronto, then Niagara, then drive to NYC (we have done that exact trip last year), then head North from NYC to Montreal (taking in a bit of the beautiful Vermont scenery perhaps) and fly to Orlando from there.

That way the car hire wouldn't be a problem - pick up in Toronto, drop off at Montreal airport.

That's a thought, although not sure about where to park a hire car in the middle of NYC (would ideally not want to drive through there anyway).

We went through that same dilemma. In the end we just valet parked it at the hotel for $75 per night (3 nights). There were other options that would have been cheaper but we went for the hassle-free option! Pull up to hotel, chuck the keys at someone and get it back 3 days later. Worth every penny
