Basically you fill a form in online and your current flights are cancelled and replaced with a holding flight - mine ( and all others) look like this even though we are in upper.

Thu 31 Dec 2020
FlightYY 101

(OPE), to (NTK),

Passenger status: Confirmed

Depart at OPEArrive at NTK
Depart time 12:00Arrive time 12:00
Cabin Class Economy
Operated by YY YY
Operated by

YY YY

When you're ready you call and re-book in the same class but you will have to pay any fare difference.

From the website :

We understand that the ever-changing travel restrictions may make you unsure about what date to change your ticket to, so we’ve got this covered. You may even decide to change your destination, and that’s ok too.

If you're unsure of your new travel dates, we’ll keep your ticket open until you’re ready to rebook.
You'll just need to make sure you rebook and travel by the 31st May 2022. There's no charge to do this but your new flights will be subject to availability and any fare difference.

This process is for only for bookings made directly with Virgin Atlantic. If you’ve booked through Virgin Holidays, or through another website or travel agent, please contact them for your options.

Once we receive and action your request, we’ll update your booking and send you confirmation. Please don’t worry if it takes a few days to get back to you, just keep your booking reference safe.

What does having an open ticket entitle you to if VS go into administration (as many news sources are suggesting).

Will the new entity (if there is one) honour these tickets or just say "nothing to do with us".

I'd want a government backed refund voucher/reschedule before I did anything other than request a full refund at the moment

It probably depends, if it does go into administration, whether it is sold as a going concern or whether it in effect goes bust and bits are sold off fire sale style...

I took the open ticket as we didn't feel confident about traveling at the end of June to Vegas, LA & San Fran. I didn't want to wait, because if the offer was withdrawn, my Z fares are £300 pp to change under normal circumstances.

I am confident in the worst case that as an airline ticket (not a credit note) it is protected under section 75.

When I read this section

If you're unsure of your new travel dates, we’ll keep your ticket open until you’re ready to rebook.
You'll just need to make sure you rebook and travel by the 31st May 2022. There's no charge to do this but your new flights will be subject to availability and any fare difference.

I can't see the point in having an open ticket if you will have to pay any additional costs. I would be asking for money back.

You can't get a refund unless the flight is cancelled or your tickets were the most expensive fully flexible fare codes, neither applied to me. it was the best option to voluntarily postpone our trip which was scheduled for 21st June.

The point is that they have a much better chance of survival if people choose open tickets than if everyone demands a refund. If they go belly up no one gets anything (flights or money) anytime soon, so it's sort of a "for the greater good" situation.

Also, in our case we can't reschedule until June because the dates don't open up until then. If we were to ask for a refund for our cancelled flights now we would have to pay for the second set of tickets in June before the refund would come through in August or so. If they were to go under between June and August we'd lose the money twice.

Open ticket experiences

Following with interest and I would be interested to know if anyone has managed to convert to an open ticket for say a September flight booked before March?

An open ticket may be the best option for us too as we’d be rescheduling before flights are released. We booked with miles so it would also be a surer thing than cancelling and hoping for reward seats.
