Car Service Advice

Hi all,

We took our car for a service and MOT yesterday. It failed its MOT due to its track rod end ball joint needing replacing. We have paid £150 for it replacing and it subsequently passed its MOT.

Today, we’ve gone out for the day and the car is making a knocking sound at low speeds. It most certainly wasn’t making any knocking sound prior to its service and MOT yesterday. Does anyone know what the most likely cause is? Something they’ve done at the garage? Something linked to the new part? I’m clueless when it comes to cars and I always worry that I’m getting ripped off. I’ve rung the garage and I’m taking it back in tomorrow. Any advice as to what I can expect it to be?
Thanks.

Is the knocking when going straight or when turning?

DH says both. But more noticeable at lower speeds.

And it’s definitely coming from the front of the car near the steering which suggests to me it’s something to do with the work it had done yesterday do you think?

If it was only happening when turning, I would have suggested CV joints.
If it is happening when going straight as well - tbh. it could be anything and it is difficult to say what without seeing the car. Given that work was done yesterday and this noise has happened since - I wonder idi they tighten everything correctly. Give then a call.

Before you drive it again, double check the wheels are all on properly. My friend had the same issue and it turns out they forgot to tighten the wheel nuts on one of the wheels after putting it back on. Could have been disastrous...

Eek! Let’s hope it’s not that. We are currently 100 mile from home.🙈

But you should have a wheel brace with you on the boot so being 100 miles away is not an issue.

Use it to check the wheel nuts are tight.

It could be that they havent tightened the ball joints properly (if it was these they were working on). Sometimes they can be a real pain as the "ball" slips. It is so difficult to help not being at the car.
