Headstone Inscriptions
Any suggestions welcome 👍
My mums husband passed away last year, he was a widower and buried with his first wife and the mum’s ashes will be put there too when the time comes. She is having trouble with the headstone inscription. It currently says ‘In loving memory of June Lewis Loving wife of Dave’ with the dates. Mum now needs to add Dave on the other side of the headstone, she wants ‘in loving memory of Dave Lewis, loving husband of Dotty’ But also wanted to mention his first wife June. Has anyone got any ideas how she could word it? Many Thanks |

Could she say "loving husband of June (yyyy- yyyy) and Dotty (yyyy-yyyy). Otherwise people who didn't know them may mistake him for a polygamist

I would keep it simple for now and just put
In loving memory of Dave Lewis beloved Husband and the dates When Mum sadly passes I would put the 3rd inscription that would tie up the loose ends.

I think putting the dates alongside the names makes sense.

“In memory of Dave Lewis xxxx-yyyy(yob & yod )
Loving husband of Dotty (leave space to add Dotty’s dates in the distant future) Followed by: And (centred) Loving (or omit) husband of June hhhh-gggg (years of their marriage) Personally I don’t think it matters that Dotty is shown first even though she was the second wife. Only family members are likely to read the inscription and you will all know the reason. Edited at 10:08 PM. |

I’ve never known that people put their partner’s name on a headstone. It must feel strange seeing your own name on one.

No names on my parents grave. It just say loving wife, mum and nana and then for my dad, loving husband, dad and grandad, then the dates. I think it also depends on the headstone and the size of the font already on there to ensure there would be room. It’s definitely something that the funeral director and stone mason could help with though.
